Riot in Coburg: 34-year-old kicks 18-year-old in the head!

On the night from Saturday to Sunday there was a physical altercation in a bar in Coburg. On Sunday morning at 2:00 a.m., police and emergency services were called to an incident in which a 34-year-old German-Kazakh and an 18-year-old Italian got into an argument with each other. The much younger of the two victims was already on the ground when the 34-year-old kicked him in the head. This attack resulted in a head injury for the 18-year-old, who was then taken to the Coburg Clinic. The exact background to the dispute is still unclear. The suspect was arrested by the Coburg police and taken to the detention rooms; the criminal police and the Coburg public prosecutor's office took over the investigation. On Sunday morning he will be brought before an investigating judge to decide on the question of detention.

In addition to this incident, there was another bizarre incident that same weekend: On Saturday evening, October 25th, a 69-year-old woman surprised the traffic police when she drove her Chevrolet in the opposite direction on the A73 at around 9:45 p.m. It was a risky maneuver that several drivers had to swerve to avoid a collision. The wrong-way driver was only stopped shortly after the Schleusingen exit by the Coburg traffic police and the Thuringia police. Witnesses are now asked to contact the Coburg traffic police to help clarify the matter.

The violent crime trend

While these incidents took place in Coburg, the general situation of violent crime in Germany does not remain unaffected. According to current statistics, violent crimes make up less than 4% of all crimes recorded by the police, but they significantly affect the population's sense of security. Around 217,000 violent crimes were recorded in 2024 - a worrying increase compared to the lows of the coronavirus pandemic. There are particularly worrying developments among young perpetrators: around a third of suspects are among them, with a significant increase in the proportion of young violent perpetrators since 2021. This could be due to economic uncertainties and the ongoing psychological stress caused by the pandemic.

Violent crime includes various crimes such as murder, aggravated assault, rape and robbery. However, the clearance rate is remarkable because the police managed to solve violent crimes in a good three quarters of the cases. In 2023, around 2,740 acts of violence against rescue workers were recorded, with around 3,970 victims. Such attacks are often related to extreme situations, alcohol consumption or drugs.

Overall, it remains to be said that the topics of security and violent crime are important topics of conversation in society. A survey in May 2024 showed that 94% of Germans see violence against people from politics, the police and emergency services as an urgent problem. Given current developments, it is crucial that both authorities and society work together on solutions to ensure safety in everyday life.
