Dachau is planning an ice arena: Woodpeckers are fighting for 7 million euros!

The city of Dachau is in ice-cold joy about the plans for a new ice arena, which is being brought to life by the Woodpeckers ice sports fans. With an estimated cost of 6 to 7 million euros, the arena will be a place for all fans of ice sports, but financing is a challenge, as a look at the current donation account shows: so far only 20,000 euros are available South Germans reported. The ESV Dachau already has 350 members who are determined to build the ice rink themselves.

The U11 ice hockey players diligently collected donations last weekend and were able to contribute 410 euros. This enables those responsible to commission an architect to carry out the basic planning. Gabriele Wieneck-Vilano, board member of the Woodpeckers, confirms that the funds collected are sufficient to obtain the first reliable figures for the project. These numbers are important in order to acquire additional major sponsors and to set up a successful financing plan, as is the case Mercury executes.

The path to the ice arena

The plans for the ice arena are constantly developing, and the city of Dachau has already announced the property as part of the discussions. This is located in the south of the ASV site on Gröbenrieder Straße, which must be cleared and cleared before construction can begin. Although the city has not planned any investments of its own in a new ice rink, in return it wants to enable schoolchild-friendly and publicly accessible uses.

The previous discussions about the ice rink were closely linked to the construction of a new multiple gymnasium. However, the plans for a sports park on Gröbenrieder Straße no longer include an ice rink. Nevertheless, the Woodpeckers can take a new step with the building rights that have existed in the new sports park since August 2023. The first detailed property planning is expected to be presented soon, while the planned start of the new ice arena's season has now been postponed to 2028, as Süddeutsche reports.

Funding and support

The financing of the ice arena depends largely on a city council resolution and the approval of a general meeting. The Woodpeckers rely on various sources of income, including major sponsors and grants from the Free State and the Bavarian State Sports Association. Borrowing is also an option to supplement the missing funds. The diverse funding programs to support the construction of sports facilities, such as those on Sports facility concepts could also show possible ways to achieve financial security.

The current challenges cannot be ignored, but the efforts to build the new ice arena are the stuff of local success stories. The commitment of the Woodpeckers, who have been working on this project for two years, could not only save Dachau ice hockey, but also bring joy and sporting enjoyment to the city for many years to come.
