Drama on the Danube: Two men drown – tragic summer 2025!
A tragic accident has shaken the region around Donauwörth. An 18-year-old young man was found dead on the Danube in Swabia on Sunday after days of searching. Details about the exact location and cause of death are currently unclear. The teenager had been missing since Monday and his mother reported him missing on Thursday evening. The search in Donauwörth, which was carried out at full speed, included the use of a water rescue helicopter, but unfortunately the hope remained unfulfilled for a long time. [Süddeutsche] reports that during a search at the confluence of the Wörnitz and Danube rivers, the missing man's personal belongings were discovered - including black sneakers, two joints and a bunch of keys.
The police suspect that the boy got into the river and had an accident. Since then there has been an intensive search for him, including divers, but without success. The exact circumstances of his disappearance remain mysterious. According to [Merkur], it remains unclear whether it could have fallen into the Wörnitz and Danube rivers.
Another drowning victim in the Finninger bathing lake
But the sad news didn't end there. Separately, a 22-year-old man drowned in the Finninger bathing lake in Dillingen on the Danube. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when witnesses reported the incident. Numerous rescue workers were immediately mobilized, including water rescue services, divers and a helicopter. The young man, a recent resident of the area, was rescued about 45 minutes later. Unfortunately, attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.
His swimming abilities are still unknown, which makes it difficult to investigate the cause. Such tragic incidents show once again that the risk of bathing and swimming in water must be taken seriously. The DLRG is reporting a total of 411 fatal accidents in waterways for Germany in 2023, an increase of 31 compared to the previous year. This is the third increase in a row and the first decrease under 400 cases since 2019. DLRG President Ute Vogt appeals to parents to recognize and point out particular dangers.
In light of these sad events, we would like to remind everyone of the high risk of swimming in natural waters. Awareness and caution are key to avoid such tragedies.
