Dorfen's digital future project: Sustainable data center is coming!
In Dorfen, a city in southern Germany, a new data center will be built in the near future, which will provide crucial support to the requirements for sustainable energy supply in the digital infrastructure. The construction of a commercially usable data center, which primarily aims to appeal to medium-sized companies, clinics and the public sector, is imminent. Loud South German newspaper Stadtwerke Dorfen has announced that they want to supply the electricity they need almost exclusively from renewable sources.
The data center will be built on around 7,500 square meters in the Dorfen Südwest industrial area, near the A94 motorway. This is the third location of the Yexio network in Germany, which is planning a total of 15 decentralized data centers to strengthen the digital infrastructure in Germany.
Sustainable energy and waste heat utilization
A central feature of the project is the use of waste heat from the data center, which is fed into the district heating network. This corresponds to heating energy of around 8,000 megawatts of natural gas per year. This not only promotes the sustainable use of resources, but also makes an important contribution to reducing CO₂. How IT Daily emphasizes, modern data centers are increasingly relying on energy-efficient cooling concepts and intelligent network controls in order to reduce the large energy requirements.
The developer, Hochtief PPP Solutions GmbH, and the investor Palladio Partners are relying on innovative technologies that are intended to both reduce the ecological footprint and upgrade the entire infrastructure in the region. Mayor Heinz Grundner sees the project as a significant stimulus for Dorfen and emphasizes the strengthening of the digital infrastructure and sustainable economic development.
Future prospects and challenges
Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 and is expected to be completed in 2027. The electricity requirements of the new data center are initially estimated to be around 2 megawatts, which will later be doubled to 4 megawatts. This corresponds to the consumption of 1,500 to 3,000 households. Engie Germany points out that operators will need to convert 75 percent of their electricity needs to renewable energy by 2025, which represents a major challenge for many.
The approach of the Dorfer data center shows how modern challenges in energy supply can be met with sustainable solutions. Even if the project will not initially create any direct jobs, it is hoped that the local project company Yexio Dorfen GmbH will generate positive trade tax revenue.
Overall, the future looks promising for Dorfen, and with a strong digital infrastructure and a clear focus on sustainability, the city will certainly take a pioneering role in the region.
