Dorothee Bittner: At the age of 60, she triumphs at the Ironman after 28 years!
A moving moment occurred in Roth on August 15, 2025: Dorothee Bittner celebrated her return to the Ironman distance after almost three decades. The 60-year-old, who has been working towards this moment since 1997, brilliantly completed the challenge, which consists of a 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike ride and 42 km run. For Bittner, this was a return to a long-held dream after she was unable to take part in 2000 due to health problems. Health setbacks, including rheumatism and a weak immune system, have long dampened her sporting ambitions.
As Merkur reports, the secret project Bittner planned her return to was something only her son Mark and husband Franz knew about. Her unconventional training method included just 55km swimming in the pool, minimal running and lots of time on the elliptical machine and cycling via Zwift. On race day, Bittner started at 8:10 a.m. in the second-to-last starting group.
A fighting day
Bittner already had to overcome considerable challenges while swimming. The rigors of the marathon left her struggling with nausea and exhaustion. Nevertheless, she managed to reach the cut-off at kilometer 30 and cross the finish line at 11:05 p.m. after almost 15 hours. The finish was accompanied by thunderous applause, which made this moment unforgettable for her as one of the greatest of her life.
Even though Bittner placed last in her age group, she didn't let that discourage her. Her main goal was to complete the distance - and she achieved it in impressive fashion. She is now planning to take part in the middle distance at Brombachsee at the end of August and would like to continue using her equipment.
There is more to it than just a sporting experience
Bittner's return to the Ironman distance not only serves as a reminder of the importance of perseverance and determination, but also illuminates the impressive ability of humans to push through adversity. The case shows that it is never too late to make a dream come true, no matter how many decades there are. Even though health problems held her back for years, Bittner has impressively proven with her personal comeback that you should never give up!
The Ironman distance doesn't seem to have hurt her strength; Rather, she managed to overcome her challenge, which gave her a new perspective on her own life. For everyone who keeps their eyes and ears open, it shows that you can get back up even after crises. This story is a powerful testament to the power of the human spirit and determination.
