Free boulder therapy: stress management for young people in Bavaria!
Lately, the world of therapy has been all about a novel, active method for promoting mental health in young people: bouldering. A promising project entitled “BooSt – Boulder yourself strong: Boulder psychotherapy against depression and stress” is led by the Psychiatric and Psychotherapeutic Clinic at the University Hospital Erlangen. It was recently announced that the study will be expanded to include the 13 to 18 year old age group in order to give even more young people the opportunity to benefit from this innovative form of therapy. There is good news for everyone interested in taking part: information sessions are taking place online. On July 2nd and July 17th, 2025, young people and their parents can learn more about the study at 6:00 p.m. These offers are non-binding and can be used without a camera or microphone, which for many is a stress-free way to gather more information. Registration to take part in the study is already possible, and participation itself is free of charge, thanks to the support of the Bavarian State Ministry for Health, Care and Prevention, which is providing over 800,000 euros Institut der Gesundheit.
How does boulder psychotherapy work?
The program includes a total of ten therapeutically accompanied bouldering units, during which participants learn strategies for self-confidence, mindfulness and resilience. The units take place in groups of up to ten young people in various bouldering halls in Erlangen, Nuremberg, Bamberg and Regensburg. The focus is on support from experienced therapists who accompany and promote the participants' bouldering experiences.
The aim of this form of therapy is to help the young people affected to better deal with stress and psychological stress. Bouldering, a form of climbing without a rope, has been shown in studies to be effective in improving mental health FAU. Attractive and motivating offers are intended to further strengthen the self-efficacy and psychological strength of young people so that they can better deal with the challenges of life.
A call to participate
This is a great opportunity for young people between the ages of 13 and 18 to take part in free, professionally supervised therapy. The first groups will start in October 2025 and January 2026, and there are no long waiting times to start studying.
