Drunk cyclists fall: seriously injured in Garmisch!
Nights in Garmisch-Partenkirchen can sometimes take unexpected turns, especially when alcohol is involved. There were two bicycle accidents at the weekend that caused quite a stir in the early hours of the morning.
The first accident occurred on Sunday at 1:15 a.m. on Wildauer Strasse. A 16-year-old cyclist apparently drove off the road because of alcohol and got tangled in an electric fence. Fortunately, he was uninjured, but the breath alcohol test produced a worrying result that exceeded the legal limit. A criminal case for drunk driving was initiated. It should be noted that bicycles are considered vehicles within the meaning of Section 24a of the StVG, which means that if the alcohol content is 0.5 per mille, it is an administrative offense, as the Kämpf law firm explains.
Serious injuries in the second accident
Just 40 minutes later, at 1:55 a.m., the second incident occurred on the bike path between Farchant and Oberau. A 35-year-old cyclist fell and sustained serious facial injuries. He had to be taken to the Murnau accident clinic by ambulance. In this case, too, there were indications that the driver was heavily intoxicated. The incident raises questions about how often such accidents occur under the influence of alcohol. According to an analysis, traffic accidents under the influence of alcohol are a significant problem that is dangerous for both those involved and the general public.
Even if no other parties were affected in these two cases, the increased alcohol level represents a major risk. The legal consequences should not be underestimated. With a blood alcohol concentration of 0.3 per mille or more, one can already speak of relative inability to drive, while from 1.1 per mille one is considered to be absolutely unfit to drive, regardless of a driving error. The possible penalties range from fines to prison sentences and driver's license suspensions, as described in the posts by Kämpf law firm and Know your limit.
The incidents show that it's not just about cycling, but also about being responsible on the road. It is never a good idea to actively participate in traffic after consuming alcohol. The two accidents must serve as a reminder to us to take good care of ourselves and others and not to go overboard when celebrating. The police are constantly on duty to reduce alcohol-related traffic accidents and increase safety on the roads.
