Josef-Hofmiller-Gymnasium achieves fourth place at the Robotics World Cup!

The world of robotics has reached new heights for Team Nrd from the Josef-Hofmiller-Gymnasium in Freising. The team achieved fourth place at an exciting German championship at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO), which recently took place in the Westphalen Hall in Dortmund. This performance secured them qualification for the WRO Open European Championship in Ljubljana, which will take place from September 2nd to 5th, as merkur.de reports.

The challenge of the competition in Dortmund was considerable. Participants had to create robots that could successfully complete various tasks on a standardized playing field. This season, for the first time, teams were allowed to use a variety of robot systems, although there were restrictions on the number of motors, size and weight. Despite technical difficulties, particularly with a non-functioning distance sensor, the team showed great ingenuity. By using color sensors again, they were able to score 144 points in the best round.

The challenge

The competition was strong. Of the original 165 minutes available to make adjustments to the robots, the students also had to complete an unknown task on the second day of the competition - a real challenge that allowed less than three hours for modification and reprogramming. With a solid performance of 85 points in the final run, they ultimately confirmed fourth place, which was a disappointment in terms of reaching the world final, but did not diminish the anticipation for Ljubljana.

“This is our fourth international participation in a robotics competition and we are really looking forward to the WRO Open European Championship,” explained one of the students. The school's robotics program is supported by several sponsors, including the Friends of the Josef-Hofmiller-Gymnasium and the company Texas Instruments from Freising.

Big event in Ljubljana

The WRO Open European Championship 2024 in Ljubljana is a significant event for aspiring technicians and programmers. Participants from nine German teams will accept the challenge. The WRO has become a highlight for students who want to learn both basic knowledge and practical skills in robotics and programming.

It should not be forgotten that competition is constantly growing at the international level. For example, in 2024, 136 teams took part in the WRO Germany finals, underscoring the steady increase in interest in robotics among young people. And so the anticipation for the upcoming challenge in Ljubljana and the upcoming season highlight in the international WRO final in Izmir, Türkiye, has long since begun. Preparations for these events are in full swing to compete against the world's best teams, reports robots-blog.com.

It remains exciting to see what innovative solutions the young talents will develop and whether they can set new standards at the upcoming WRO Open European Championship in Ljubljana. Let's stay tuned to the future adventures of robotics and the impressive achievements of the teams represented from the region and all over Germany!
