Drunk driving: Red Caddy freaks out and flees near Freyung!
On Wednesday afternoon around 2:50 p.m. a scandalous traffic accident occurred on the B12 near Freyung. A red VW Caddy drove around a yield sign head-on and then continued its journey undeterred. Attentive road users followed the person who caused the accident and immediately informed the police. This behavior is particularly important in view of the dangers of drunk driving, which will continue to come into focus in Germany in 2023.
The driver, a 52-year-old man from the FRG district, was eventually caught by a police patrol. During the check, officers noticed a strong smell of alcohol. In order to gain clarity about his condition, a blood sample was taken from the driver. After consultation with the Passau public prosecutor's office, his driver's license was also confiscated.
Drunk driving – a big risk
As the ADAC statistics highlight, the risk of accidents increases dramatically for drunk drivers. Significant reaction delays can occur from just 0.5 per mille, while a blood alcohol concentration of over 1.1 per mille is considered to be completely unfit to drive. These values are particularly alarming because they are directly linked to serious traffic accidents. Last year, more than 18,000 people were involved in alcohol-related accidents in Germany, of which 198 died tragically.
The legal consequences are also not without their consequences: with an alcohol content of 0.3 per mille, you not only face fines, but also points in Flensburg and, in the worst case, the loss of your driving license. In the event of an accident, there is even a risk of recourse from motor vehicle liability insurance, which can cost up to 5,000 euros, depending on the case.
Call for help
In this specific case, the Freyung police station is asking for help from the public. Investigators are looking for additional witnesses who may have observed additional threats in connection with the incident. Information can be sent to the police on 08551/96070.
Responsible behavior on the road is essential to avoid such incidents. The combination of alcohol and driving under the influence of drugs or medication further increases the dangers and should be avoided at all costs. Planning an evening calmly can help you avoid dangerous situations - be it by choosing public transport or having a sober driver among your friends.
These events should give us all pause. Every person has the responsibility to drive safely and prudently and to protect those around them.
