DFB Cup: Fürth against Lohne - start to the new season!

On Sunday the excitement for the new football season in Germany reached its first peak. The draw for the first round of the DFB Cup, traditionally the first competitive match, brought together SPVGG GREUTHERFürth and the regional league team TuS Blau-Weiß Lohne. The fast 100-meter sprinter Owen Ansah drew the pairing that should make fans of both teams sit up and take notice. This first encounter will take place between August 15th and 18th, 2025, more precise timing information will be announced later, as reported by SGF1903.

TuS Blau-Weiß Lohne qualified for the DFB Cup by winning the Lower Saxony Cup against VfL Osnabrück. Coach Thomas Kleine has already announced that he will prepare his team meticulously for the clash with Fürth and will stay in the competition for as long as possible. That sounds like an exciting duel in which the lower-class Lohners have the chance to prove themselves against their higher-class opponents.

The DFB Cup: A competition with tradition

The DFB Cup, also known as the Tschammer Cup until 1943, is a national football competition that has been held annually by the German Football Association (DFB) since 1935. This cup is the second most important title in German club football, right after the German championship. In the current 2024/25 season, which is the 82nd edition, 64 teams are fighting for the coveted title in the knockout system. The Wikipedia points out that the cup matches are played in two halves of 45 minutes each, and in the event of a draw, extra time and possibly a penalty shootout follow.

A total of 18 teams from the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga, the first four from the 3rd league and 24 other teams, mainly association cup winners from lower leagues, qualified for the competition. This makes the DFB Cup a springboard for smaller clubs who have the chance of notable upsets against higher-class teams.

The cup season is rounded off with the final in the Berlin Olympic Stadium, which has been taking place there since 1985. The opportunity to qualify for the UEFA Europa League as cup winners provides an additional incentive for all participating teams.

The fans can look forward to an exciting upcoming duel between Fürth and Lohne. As always, the DFB Cup promises exciting games, unexpected twists and lots of football feeling. Let the games begin!
