FC Augsburg loses to Greuther Fürth in the friendly in Schwabmünchen!
On September 3, 2025, FC Augsburg used the international break for a test match against SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the small but nice Siegmund Arena in Schwabmünchen. The curtain fell on a disappointing defeat for FCA; the game ended 1:2. The total of 2,301 spectators saw a committed performance by the two teams, with the FCA in particular having to do without a dozen national players and instead relying on young talent.
The game began as one would expect from a successful friendly match - with an initial, almost promising attack by FCA. Thanks to a precise cross from Yusuf Kabadayi, captain Phillip Tietz hit the crossbar in the third minute. But FCA failed to capitalize on this early opportunity. Greuther Fürth was also unsuccessful: in the 24th minute, FCA goalkeeper Nediljko Labrović saved a shot from Omar Sillah, which also failed to hit the post.
Exciting gameplay
Both teams showed a lot of effort until half-time, but there were no clear chances to score on either side. Shortly before the half-time whistle, Labrović prevented a great opportunity for Sillah with another strong save (45th + 3). In the second half, FCA changed things up a bit - seven new players entered the field to bring a breath of fresh air.
But even after the changes, Augsburg's exploitation of opportunities remained sobering. Hendrik Hofgärtner failed to score in the 50th minute, and Juan Cabrera only hit the post (52nd minute). In contrast, Sillah opened the encounter in the 54th minute when he scored the first goal for Fürth. Felix Higl even increased the score to 0:2 in the 62nd minute. The FCA finally had success in the 76th minute through Hofgärtner, who was able to make it 1-2, but the opportunities remained unused in the final phase when Fürth missed two top-class chances in the last minute (89th/90th minute).
The look ahead
With the defeat behind them, the FCA's focus is now on the next competitive game against FC St. Pauli, which takes place on Sunday, September 14th at 3:30 p.m. While the number of spectators was still decent on Tuesday, the team still needs to improve for the upcoming duel after last trotting out of the stadium with a 2-3 defeat against FC Bayern Munich. A correct result against Fürth would certainly have done FCA good, after all the last encounter with this opponent was a clear win from Augsburg's point of view (4:1).
It will be exciting for FCA supporters to see how the young players who were able to demonstrate their talent in Schwabmünchen develop further and whether the team can be more efficient in front of the goal on Sunday. Until then, the anticipation remains for the next home game and the hope for a positive turnaround in the still young season, which already has some exciting moments and insights in store.
