Fürth opens its treasure chest: historical paintings can finally be seen!

The city of Fürth opens a treasure chest for art lovers! Today, on December 6, 2025, an exciting chapter in the history of the city's art collection will open: parts of the painting collection, which has been hidden for a long time in Burgfarrnbach Castle, will be presented to the public for the first time. The first snapshots of this treasure chest are a celebration for everyone who is enthusiastic about the treasures of art - this reports NN.

The collection covers a wide range, including paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures. It has its roots in four significant collections assembled over the years. The first collection, the estate of Conrad Gebhardt, contains around 8,500 works. Gebhardt, who lived from 1791 to 1864, decided in his will to bequeath his collection to the city of Fürth. The Weidenbacher estate, as well as a graphic collection and other works, also contribute to the large number of over 24,000 exhibits that are currently archived in Fürth Fürthwiki.

Art with history

The collection has an eventful history. It was stored in poor conditions for a long time, which posed major challenges for the city administration. But in 2022, the city council provided funds for the development and inventory of the Gebhardt collection. Dr. Verena Friedrich is now responsible for documenting the object data so that the works are presented fairly.

The scope of the works of art is impressive - the most important work, “David and Abigail” (1752) by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, will captivate many visitors. But prints by Albrecht Dürer and paintings by Dutch masters are also part of this impressive collection. With the planned partial opening, the city hopes to appeal to a broader audience and to inspire more “art lovers” about the treasures of Fürth’s history.

Art and culture – Other museums are also recommended to visit

There are a number of other outstanding art museums in Germany that art lovers should not miss. There are three important pinakotheks in Maxvorstadt in Munich. There are also extraordinary works there, including “The Great Last Judgment” by Rubens and Leonardo da Vinci’s “Madonna with the Carnation”. A visit there, especially on Sundays, is a real bargain with admission costing just one euro Germany.

All art lovers now need to keep an eye on the dates! The first exhibitions will certainly be an experience that will remain in your memory for a long time. One thing is certain: the treasure trove of Fürth's painting collection will attract many new and old art fans and ensure a lively cultural life in the city.
