Alpspitz wave pool: 33 million euros for brilliant renovation!

The renovation of the popular Alpspitz wave pool in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is in full swing and promises an exciting transformation for the outdoor pool. The municipal works have stuck hard and invest impressive 33 million euros in the general renovation of this facility, which has been closed since February 2023. What can the bathers expect if the gates are reopened in the first half of 2026?

The floor plan and the water surface of the pool of 943 square meters remain unchanged. Memorable orange tiles from the early years of the pool in 1975, which for many exude a nostalgic flair, will only be preserved in two places. This renovation project aims to provide children and schools with swimming opportunities again in a timely manner, so the need for renovation is considered urgent.

Challenges and progress

As reported by merkur.de, there were delays during the construction due to delivery difficulties and inadequate quality of the work. Despite these challenges, which are not uncommon in public procurement law, the general renovation makes those responsible positively look into the future.

A special highlight of the renovation will be the facade, which will be equipped with modern in-glass PV modules to both generate electricity and provide effective glare protection. The changing rooms, shower areas and sanitary facilities will be spacious, including a barrier-free changing room, to meet the needs of all visitors.

Funding and energy renovation

The project receives strong support from funding: 2.4 million euros for the teaching pool comes from the Free State of Bavaria, while 3.4 million euros for the tourist infrastructure and another 2.5 million euros flow from the federal program. The federal government provided a total of 400 million euros for the energetic renovation of municipal institutions, including free baths, such as bmwsb.bund.de.

These investments send a clear message: improving the local social infrastructure and ensuring high-quality, climate-friendly facilities are the priority. Outdoor pools should not only be reopened, but also optimized in terms of energy efficiency.

In addition to insulation, paving work and the exciting installation of a swimming channel are also intended as part of the external work. The bathroom promises a modern look and comfort through stainless steel pools, with the exception of the toddler area. In addition, a new sauna is being built in the second construction phase, which is estimated at costs between 3 and 5 million euros.

If the Alpspitz wave pool opens its gates again next year, all outdoor pool lovers can look forward to a successful mix of tradition and progress. The community once again proves that it has a good knack for future -oriented projects that meet the wishes and needs of its citizens.
