Protest in Murnau: Citizens demand sustainable traffic planning instead of asphalt!
Things are boiling in Murnau and Seehausen: around 200 citizens have gathered to protest against the planned new B2 route. This route, which will be up to 70 meters wide, would run through the two towns and agricultural areas in Seehausen. The newly founded citizens' initiative “Future instead of Asphalt” has campaigned to stop these plans. This is not just about preserving nature, but also about sustainable transport planning that takes both people and the environment into account. The protest highlights the concerns of local residents and the wide range of negative impacts that such a major project could bring.
Fears about increasing through traffic are at the center of the criticism. The initiative emphasizes that the planned road does not relieve traffic in the town, but rather attracts through traffic. In this context, experiences from nearby places such as Farchant and Oberau are also cited, which make it clear how such projects can encourage surreptitious traffic. Citizens are therefore urgently demanding better solutions for traffic flow control, the expansion of sustainable mobility offerings and the protection of local structures.
The plans of the bypass road
In addition to the protests, the BVWP 2030 also sheds new light on the situation. According to information from Strassenbau Bayern, this plan envisages a north-east bypass of Murnau, which will serve to relieve the extremely busy local thoroughfare through federal highway 2. This bypass is classified as an urgent need, with current planning being in the preliminary investigation phase. The route has already been largely predetermined and the primary goal is to reduce through traffic on the B2, an important north-south connection.
The bypass will be approximately 2.1 kilometers long and the estimated cost is 29.4 million euros. The subsequent construction phase provides for a relief road through Murnau, which, together with the removal of the level crossing on State Road 2062, will form a comprehensive traffic concept. Various route variants are currently being considered and a traffic report is being prepared, which will help to better assess these variants.
The economic and social consequences
A critical point that the “Future instead of Asphalt” initiative addresses is the massive interventions in the cultural landscape. The Jais family's agricultural business is particularly affected, as they would have to give up up to 20 hectares of their land. Such steps not only come at the expense of nature, but also affect the quality of life and the economic situation of numerous residents in Murnau and Seehausen.
In summary, it can be said that the planned B2 route is heating up people's minds and the citizens' initiative is making clear demands. The focus is on innovative and sustainable solutions for transport that take people and nature into account.
