The hot summer days not only bring joy and vacation mood, but also considerable challenges for traffic safety on our streets. For a few days now it has been reported that in Bavaria Blow-ups -dangerous street breakouts that arise at extreme temperatures. Older motorway sections in particular are affected, which consist of thin layers of concrete, as they can push each other up in the heat.

According to traffic experts, bulges or broken ways of the road surface can occur at temperatures above 30 degrees on these streets, which is a real danger for all road users. The motorway sections that have already been repaired several times are particularly susceptible. The ADAC points out that such incidents have become less common in Germany, but can still occur unexpectedly and mostly affect joints and interfaces.

There are several highly endangered areas in Bavaria. These include the A3 between Deggendorf and Hengersberg, the a92 between Oberschleißheim and Eching-Ost as well as the a93 from Saalhaupt to Elsendorf. On these sections, speed limits of a maximum of 120 km/h have been valid for all vehicles and 80 km/h for motorcyclists since May to minimize the risk on uneven lanes. This is done in close cooperation with the roadmasters, which regularly control the affected routes in the heat to recognize dangers early on.

It is noteworthy that modern concrete ceilings withstand the loads better. A spokesman for Autobahn GmbH emphasized that heat damage is excluded in newer roads, as they are based on modern standards with a fabric thickness between 26 and 30 cm. In comparison, the old concrete ceilings, the strength of which is often only 20 to 22 cm, cannot be up to today's traffic loads and are therefore more susceptible to blow-ups. The ADAC notes that the state's liability only applies if demonstrably no controls or warning signs are set up.

However, the situation in Germany is not isolated: In the past, similar problems were known in southern Europe, especially in Italy, where reports on “melting roads” caused traffic disruptions. However, there is currently no evidence of problems in Austria.
