Drink driving with over two per mille! Woman causes serious crash
A collision occurred in an alarming traffic situation in Kulmbach, which urgently highlights the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol. A 54-year-old woman drove her KIA out of the parking lot of a business onto Albert-Ruckdeschel-Straße and overlooked the vehicle of a 52-year-old from Kulmbach. The subsequent crash caused the KIA's airbags to deploy, but fortunately both drivers were uninjured. However, the material damage is significant and is estimated at around 30,000 euros Bayreuther Tagblatt reported.
The transport company quickly took action and secured the scene of the accident, while the fire brigade and the building yard cleaned up the spilled operating materials. When the accident was recorded, the officers noticed the smell of alcohol from the KIA driver. A breath alcohol test carried out showed an alarming concentration of over two per thousand. In view of this result, not only was the driver's license confiscated, but a blood sample was also arranged at the Kulmbach Clinic. The police then initiated an investigation into endangering road traffic while under the influence of alcohol and warned urgently about the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Driving under the influence of alcohol in Germany
A look at current statistics shows that drunk driving continues to be a serious problem. According to data from Statista Alcohol makes a significant contribution to every fourth road fatality in the EU. In Germany it is encouraging that the majority of road users stay sober, but the numbers also make it clear that many still get behind the wheel. An online survey found that 86.5% of car drivers did not consume alcohol before driving, but there is still a significant minority who do not take it too seriously.
Responsibility in road traffic
As part of the EU project BASELINE, the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) has taken measures to determine the proportion of drivers who use a vehicle despite drinking alcohol. A worrying finding from this survey is that 50% of car drivers believe it is “very unlikely” to be tested for alcohol. This encourages negligent behavior that repeatedly leads to accidents. A slightly more positive aspect is that the vast majority of drivers comply with the legal limits: 96.4% of car drivers stated that they do not exceed the blood alcohol limit of 0.5 per mille. Nevertheless, the warning from the Kulmbach police should be taken seriously: Anyone driving should always be sober.
