Important S-Bahn route between Nuremberg and Lauf closed for months!

From August 4th, an important railway line in the Nuremberg area will be closed for several weeks. This affects the route between Nuremberg Central Station and Lauf links der Pegnitz and will last until September 15th. Loud Mercury The closure is due to extensive construction work to improve accessibility at several S-Bahn stations.

The affected S2 stations are Nuremberg-Ostring, Nuremberg-Mögeldorf, Schwaig and Röthenbach an der Pegnitz. A big step is being taken here towards step-free access for all passengers. The aim of this construction work is to adapt the entrance edges of the S-Bahn to the platform edges, as there is currently a height difference of up to 20 cm. To do this, DB InfraGO will raise the track bed and carry out the corresponding construction work, during which tracks, sleepers and ballast will be dismantled and a new leveling layer and new tracks will be installed.

Details about the construction period and replacement traffic

Construction work is usually scheduled from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., although in exceptional cases there may also be night shifts. Particularly noise-intensive work is planned at the stations during specific periods: from August 4th to 14th in Nuremberg-Ostring, from August 14th to 26th in Mögeldorf, from August 26th to September 4th in Schwaig and finally from September 4th to 14th in Röthenbach an der Pegnitz. This also has these details German railway provided.

During the entire construction period, the S2 trains will not run and a replacement bus service will be set up. Travelers are encouraged to find out about departure times using the DB Navigator, on the bahn.de website or via notices at the stations. Here the DB fulfills its responsibility to inform passengers in a timely manner in order to minimize inconveniences.

Comprehensive accessibility measures

The need for these conversions is clear: many S-Bahn stations in and around Nuremberg are not yet barrier-free and the boarding height of the trains often does not match the height of the platforms. This is because trains with a uniform entry height of 76 cm have been used in the Nuremberg S-Bahn network since the end of December 2020, while many platforms have not yet been adapted accordingly. The Free State of Bavaria and the DB are already investing generously in these renovations, including making access to the S3 between Feucht and Altdorf barrier-free in the summer of 2023.

In addition to the current work, further renovation work at several stations on the S2 is planned for 2026. The total volume of investments amounts to over 34 million euros, with around 9 million euros being budgeted for the current measures alone. This information strengthens the argument that creating barrier-free access for all passengers is a top priority. Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter and DB Group representative Heiko Büttner unanimously emphasize the importance of this project.

Rail users in the region can hope that the work will be carried out efficiently and that the S-Bahn will soon be step-free accessible to all passengers. Because as the saying goes? Everyone should be able to move around without any problems - and Deutsche Bahn has a good hand in this in Nuremberg!
