New illustrated book reveals the beauty of the Spessart forests!

In the picturesque Spessart, nature lovers and book lovers can look forward to a new work: Michael and Joachim Kunkel will publish their second illustrated book entitled “Natural Forests in the Spessart” in autumn 2025. How main-echo.de reports, this volume is the continuation of the first illustrated book “Der Spessart”, which was published in 2021.

The Kunkel siblings, who founded the Heigenbrücken branch of the Federal Nature Conservation Association in 1983, are passionately committed to the topic of forests and nature conservation. Michael Kunkel brings in his impressive photographs from a rich archive, while Joachim Kunkel, who has a long professional life in forestry, writes the texts. He not only studied forestry sciences in Munich, but also successfully passed the major forestry state examination.

A commitment to nature

The brothers are also involved in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo and are working with the “Friends of the Spessart” on the development of a national park and the creation of a biosphere region. They have recognized that the biodiversity of forests cannot simply be secured through natural forestry - a plea for use-free forests runs as a common thread through the new book. The volume will consist of 246 pages and will be available for 44 euros, while its predecessor is available for 39.95 euros.

An alarming point that the Kunkels raise is that only five percent of the state forest in the Spessart is protected as natural forest. Your goal is to increase this share to ten percent. The photographs in the new illustrated book show the breathtaking flora and fauna of the Spessart and invite readers to discover the beauty of these forests.

Forest protection in the Spessart

Joachim Kunkel was deputy head of the Schöllkrippen Forestry Office until 2009, before moving to the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry in Aschaffenburg. His experiences flow into the texts in the illustrated book, in which he highlights the importance of biodiversity and natural forestry. With their project, the Kunkels not only want to draw attention to the beauty of the Spessart forests, but also to the need for their protection. Because nature is important and together they want to make a contribution to its preservation.

The upcoming illustrated book is not only a beautiful book for nature lovers, but also an urgent call to stand up for the forests and their future. Anyone who appreciates the wonderful nature of the Spessart should not miss this work.
