Oktoberfest 2025: Chaos and tragedies at the Oktoberfest tapping!
The Oktoberfest in Munich began on September 24, 2025 and is once again attracting millions of visitors to the largest folk festival in the world. Almost a million festival guests celebrated on the first weekend - a real spectacle on the Theresienwiese that is sure to make people's hearts beat faster again. This year, the price of beer is up to 15.80 euros per pint, an increase of 50% since 2015. But it's not just the prices that are rising, the temperatures too: a record-breaking 31 degrees Celsius was measured on the first day of the festival.
The opening was celebrated as usual with the traditional tapping by Munich's mayor Dieter Reiter. However, the start of the festival also brought with it some unpleasant events. A 21-year-old man was transported to a clinic because of life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Fortunately, his life is now out of danger and on the mend FOCUS online reported. At the same time, there were numerous missions for the medical service on the opening weekend: 664 patients were cared for on Sunday - on Saturday there were even 910. Most had to struggle with circulatory problems, which were more due to the high temperature than to excessive alcohol consumption.
Tragic incidents and unbridled fun
The death of a 71-year-old showwoman, who suffered a medical emergency on Saturday morning, cast a tragic shadow. Despite quick resuscitation measures by the Aicher Ambulance, she died on site, which noticeably affected the mood on the festival grounds. The police have launched an investigation into the cause of death, but there is currently no evidence of foul play Süddeutsche.de is to be read.
In the midst of all these events, however, there were also strange incidents that caused amusement, such as the couple who were caught making love between chicken bones and napkins. On the other hand, two men were reported for sexual harassment - a 49-year-old after an incident in the festival tent and a 32-year-old who exposed his genitals in a tent. Of course, such incidents are not the great glory that Oktoberfest strives for.
Beer and delicacies are very popular
The culinary delights are also not neglected at the Oktoberfest. Around 400,000 fried chickens are sold annually, and the alcohol selection is almost overwhelming. The alcohol content of the Oktoberfest beer is at least 13.5 percent original wort, and the volume served amounts to an incredible seven million liters per year, which underlines the demand from guests. And even though cash is still the most common means of payment, cashless payments are becoming increasingly popular Statista.
As usual, a lot of emphasis will be placed on tradition this year. Nevertheless, it turns out that the majority of Germans see the festival more as a drinking festival than as a traditional event. The first Oktoberfest was celebrated back in 1810, and the real Oktoberfest always starts on the Saturday after September 15th - another reason to celebrate in the Bavarian capital and enjoy the time together with friends and family.
