Schützenstrasse becomes a gastro mile - new life for Munich's problem child!
Munich's Schützenstrasse, one of the city's dingiest streets, could soon be given a new lease of life. An application in the planning committee envisages converting the street between Stachus and the main train station into a lively gastro mile. Report that tz.de. The aim is to revitalize the neglected area with attractive offers such as kiosks, food trucks and mobile play elements for families. Another highlight will be a photo exhibition on the construction site fence, with attractive motifs that invite people to post on social media.
Schützenstrasse has a bad reputation, especially because of the ruins of the Galeria. The Galeria building was to be replaced by a new building by the renowned architect David Chipperfield. But since René Benko's Signa Group went bankrupt, construction work has come to a standstill, causing the entire area to fall into disrepair. The insolvency administrator is currently working on selling the properties, while the development plan has already been approved on October 29, 2025 sueddeutsche.de reported.
Silent construction sites and desperate business people
The image of Schützenstrasse is characterized by the numerous idle construction sites, especially around the train station. Access to Schützenstraße is blocked by wooden fences and pallets filled with paving mortar. A construction worker confirmed that access is possible, but the overwhelming chaos deters many. Green garbage containers are being emptied in front of the Hotel Koenigshof, while access to the luxury hotel is still blocked by red and white beacons. The hotel is scheduled to open in a few weeks, but remains a construction site and disappointment among business people is growing.
The fate of many local businesses is particularly bitter for the area. Several shops have already closed, including a Rewe in the basement and a hotel and restaurant in the Pini House, which had to cease operations due to necessary renovations. In front of the former Karstadt there are posters with the inscription “We say thank you, Munich”, a reference to the surprising closure of this store at the end of 2023. What remains is an atmosphere of hopelessness and despair among the commercial residents.
A glimmer of hope?
Despite the current difficulties, there are efforts to bring a breath of fresh air to the dilapidated Schützenstrasse. The ideas put forward in the application to transform the street show that the city is ready to take the first step towards revitalizing the area. If the plans are successfully implemented, Schützenstrasse could soon be a popular meeting place for Munich residents and tourists - a true gastronomic mile in the heart of a city that has a lot to offer and whose potential is far from exhausted.
