Neu-Ulm remains a fair trade city: Committed to fair trade!

Neu-Ulm retains its title as a “Fairtrade City” and can now use it for another two years. On December 8, 2017, the city was recognized as a Fairtrade city for the first time, and the successful recertification by Fairtrade Germany underlines the ongoing commitment to fair trade and sustainable consumption, which has now been actively pursued for eight years. “We are responsible for fair trading conditions,” emphasizes Mayor Katrin Albsteiger in a recent statement.
This is reported by the Augsburger Allgemeine.

Around 30 actors from different areas form the Fairtrade steering group in Neu-Ulm and continuously implement projects to provide information about fair trade. With a common goal, they strengthen awareness of global connections and promote fair alternatives in everyday life. City events also rely on Fairtrade products to support this good principle.

Sustainable development in the Neu-Ulm district

The Neu-Ulm district has also taken steps in the right direction and is promoting fair trade at the local level. As part of TransFair's international campaign, the application to become a Fairtrade district took place, which was confirmed in 2019 with the certification as the Neu-Ulm Fairtrade district. This award is not only a confirmation of the long-standing efforts in the district, but also a way to help disadvantaged small farming families in developing countries.

An important goal of fair trade is to ensure that minimum prices cover production costs and guarantee a minimum subsistence level. In addition, the surcharges enable producers to invest in a better future. The district has founded a network that acts as a central steering group to support fair trade and the fair trade movement.

Actions and commitment to Fairtrade

The Fairtrade movement is on the rise in Germany. Every year, campaigns and events are organized by over 1,800 Fairtrade steering groups to raise awareness of fair trade and empower producers in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The current Fairtrade Advent Calendar campaign 2025 shows this impressively by providing exciting stories, facts and prizes behind every door. Together with 933 award-winning Fairtrade towns, 1025 Fairtrade schools and 51 Fairtrade universities, the Fairtrade campaigns Initiative brings a breath of fresh air to the topic of sustainable consumption.

Overall, the opportunity to become active as a Fairtrade city or district not only creates a good feeling for the participants, but also real support for those who are fighting for fair conditions and a better quality of life in developing countries. There is still a long way to go and every step towards fair trade is a step in the right direction.
