Traditional costume in Senden: a festival of tradition and community!

On Sunday, June 29, 2025, Senden becomes the scene of a festive traditional costume festival that promises more than 1000 participants and around 50 groups. A highlight of the event will be the big pageant, which starts at 1:30 p.m. at the middle school, followed by a solemn entry into the marquee at 3 p.m. The celebrations start at 9 a.m. with an open -air service on the city park stage, and the groups of children will also do their best in the marquee from 11 a.m. This hustle and bustle is not only a feast for the eyes, but also an expression of the cultural identity of the region, which is deeply rooted in the Swabian tradition. According to swp the festival is organized by the home and folk costume association "d’ Unterillertaler Senden -ay", which counts 180 members and with this event the 50th anniversary City survey of Senden celebrates.

The Sendener Volkskönt, which is based on historical elements, presents itself with chenille bike hoods, which are manufactured in careful manual work. The Swabian lederhosen will also play an important role. In contrast to the Bavarian lederhosen, they are characterized by their wider latz. This costume has originated as a rural feast clothing of the lower Illertal from 1830 and has since lost none of its charm.

tradition and style

As in other Swabian regions, the variety of traditional fashion can also be seen in Senden. The folk dance group, which has occurred in festive folds from the 19th century since 1980, offers a special spectacle. The members of the group sew their costumes themselves according to old templates. Among the men can be found in light or black lederhosen in the Swabian cut, red wams and black shovel hats, while women appear in pretty bieder skirt outfits that are decorated with fine details such as blue moire straps. The apron color differs depending on the marital status - a detail that tells an exciting story, as Albverein does.

More and more young people are discovering the costume for themselves and thus radiating a feeling of togetherness and tradition. The Swabian costume is now present not only at festivities, but also at many cultural events, of which the Stuttgart Spring Festival and the Cannstatter Volksfest are some important ones, as can be seen on Chiemseer Dirndl

With the traditional costume festival in Senden it becomes clear once again how lively and adaptable the Swabian costume is. It is presented in both traditional and modern interpreted variants, which makes it a fascinating part of culture in Baden-Württemberg.

The traditional costume festival in Senden not only promises colorful moves and exciting performances, but also a contemplative return to home and our roots. As an integral part of German folk culture, another foundation for the lively tradition of traditional costumes in the region is laid.
