Ulm nests offer shelter and help to the homeless during the winter
On Monday, November 10th, it's that time again: The so-called Ulm Nests on Karlsplatz and the Old Cemetery will open their doors and offer homeless people a safe place to retreat during the cold season. These innovative sleeping capsules, which are primarily intended for those who cannot or do not want to go to an overnight shelter, are a valuable component of the Ulm homeless assistance program.
These nests, which were first introduced in winter 2019, have proven themselves in the new design since 2021. Wood has been switched to powder-coated steel panels, and instead of the previous hatch, the capsules now have a classic door. This not only provides an improved sense of security, but also allows users to lock the capsule from the inside - an aspect that is highly valued. Sensors on the capsules inform the Caritas Association Ulm/Alb-Donau when the nests are being used, so that employees can visit the guests the next morning and inform them about further offers of help.
Support in the cold season
In recent years, the Ulm nests have offered shelter to 44 people this winter, which corresponds to around 60 percent capacity. Compared to previous years, the number of overnight stays has decreased slightly, which may be due to the milder temperatures in December. The nests are part of an extensive support offer in Ulm, which also includes an overnight shelter, a day care center and a cold bus.
Another advantage of the nests is that they are also suitable for people with dogs who want to avoid separation from their new friends. The cleaning company Barz supports the initiatives on a donation basis, which shows how strong the social commitment is in the region.
Innovative concepts in Ulm
The returning Ulm nests are not alone. New ideas and concepts are constantly being developed in Ulm to meet the needs of homeless people. This year, for example, successful negotiations have also led to additional sheltered overnight accommodations in parking garages. These initiatives show how important it is to prevent cold and frostbite in the city.
Everyone who comes to the Ulm nests is not only offered a warm place to spend the night, but also the opportunity to enjoy warm tea after sleeping and have personal conversations. Norman Kurock from Caritas Ulm/Alb-Donau is on duty every morning to look after the guests and provide them with information about the wide range of help offers.
In summary, the Ulm nests are a shining example of social cohesion and creativity in dealing with social challenges. It remains to be hoped that these valuable nests will continue to exist in the years to come and can offer their users protection and security.
