Garbage backpack in Heinrichsheim: Fast fire brigade extinguishes fire!

On Wednesday, July 17, 2025, a surprising incident occurred in Heinrichsheim when garbage collection employees discovered smoke coming from their truck. According to information from Donaukurier, the driver of the vehicle noticed the smoke at 2:15 p.m. and drove the car onto an open gravel area to avoid anything worse. When the loading area was opened, it was discovered that a small fire had formed in the residual waste, which was quickly extinguished by the firefighters from Neuburg and Heinrichsheim. Fortunately, there was no property damage and the exact cause of the fire remains unclear for the time being.

But that wasn't the only fire department operation that day. Five volunteer fire departments in Heinrichsheim demonstrated their skills in an impressive large-scale exercise. As the Augsburger Allgemeine reports, it was an exercise that took place in the Ziegler family's property. Under the command of Michael Eber, the commander of the Heinrichsheim fire department, a simulated fire was started in a hall, producing thick smoke. The emergency services had to rescue and treat several injured people using respiratory protection. At the same time, high pressure was used to extinguish the fire from outside, with hose lines being laid to the nearby golf course pond. Around 70 firefighters were involved in this scenario, and both Eber and the district fire inspection observers expressed satisfaction with how the exercise went.

Firefighting statistics and challenges

Such incidents are not just local, but also part of a larger picture when looking at global fire statistics. The CTIF report on world fire statistics shows that fire prevention and control are an important part of our safety. According to information from CTIF, significant statistics on fires in various countries have been collected since 1995. These reports cover, among other things, fire deaths, injuries and the efficiency of the fire departments.

In 2020, for example, almost 70 million fire brigade calls were recorded, of which around 4 million were fires. The statistics also highlight that 24.2% of fires occurred in residential buildings and these account for the majority of fire deaths. These trends illustrate the need for continuous training and practice for firefighters, such as is practiced in Heinrichsheim.

In summary, it can be said that both the immediate operations such as the extinguished fire in the garbage truck and the extensive exercise by the volunteer fire departments are important elements in ensuring safety in our community. Given the global statistics, it is encouraging to see active work on fire suppression and prevention in our region.
