Storm and snow: DWD warns of dangers throughout Bavaria!

The New Year's Eve celebrations in Bavaria didn't go quite according to plan this year: the snow, which was supposed to create a wintry atmosphere, was more of a tentative splash. Instead of foggy, beautiful winter landscapes, there were more dangers on the roads. On this January 3, 2026, the warned German Weather Service (DWD) of squalls and snowdrifts in numerous districts and declared warning level 2.

The affected districts extend across large parts of Bavaria. Especially in the east and north, including in the districts of Tirschenreuth, Schwandorf, Cham and Regen, residents have to expect winds of up to 85 km/h. These damaging gusts may continue until Sunday January 4th. While you feel safe from the wind, other areas have warning levels that “only” indicate wind gusts of around 55 km/h. But here too, caution is required Weather hazards reported, because the gusts could even increase to 65 km/h in open areas.

Be careful on the roads!

During the night hours there will be frost and slippery conditions on the roads in most regions. According to the DWD, light snowfall is to be expected, especially in the northern half of Bavaria, which can cause locally slippery conditions. Affected areas where light snowfall is expected until 3 a.m. on Sunday morning include Middle Franconia and Upper Palatinate.

Although the amount of snow is limited - the fresh snow is estimated at 1 to 3 cm, above 400 m it could be up to 5 cm - the risk of freezing water or frozen rain should not be underestimated. Severe Weather Center notes that road conditions are extremely vulnerable during the prolonged periods of rain and frost.

Current weather conditions

The cause of the changeable weather lies in a low pressure area over the Baltic Sea, which brings cold, polar air masses with it. These are directed into the region by a northwesterly current. In combination with this, isolated snow showers in the Alps and in northern Bavaria are causing uncomfortable conditions.

Especially on Sunday night there could be significant snowdrifts in the low mountain ranges and Alps, especially above 600 m. It is therefore important to think carefully about your plans for the coming days. Anyone traveling should make early decisions and possibly use winter equipment.

Remember to secure loose outdoor items and secure tents and other coverings! The current updated warnings are expected again this evening, no later than 8:30 p.m.
