Breitachklamm – a masterpiece of nature
A real insider tip is the Breitachklamm, which extends in Oberstdorf in the Oberallgäu district. Oberstdorf, a climatic health resort with around 9,600 inhabitants, is home to this spectacular gorge. The Breitachklamm is considered the deepest rocky gorge in Central Europe. At their narrowest point the walls narrow to just two meters, while the steep cliffs rise up to 100 meters into the sky. The hiking trail through the gorge is about 4.2 kilometers long and can be completed in about 1.5 hours.
What makes the Breitachklamm special is the noise of the waterfalls, which becomes even more intense when it rains. Here, hikers can experience how powerful nature can be as they roam the secured paths along the narrow gorge slopes.
Starzlachklamm – the charm of Allgäu nature
Also in Oberallgäu, more precisely in Sonthofen, the picturesque Starzlachklamm awaits hikers. This small but beautiful gorge is located in the Winkel district and has the largest city in the Oberallgäu, Sonthofen, as its neighbor. The path through the Starzlachklamm is around 2.5 kilometers long and can be hiked comfortably in around 45 minutes. Here, visitors can enjoy small streams and natural rock pools that offer a refreshing change.
The Starzlachklamm has its own charm. However, when it is wet you should be a little more careful when walking on the slippery footbridges, as safety is the top priority. A little head for heights is an advantage here in order to be able to fully enjoy the beauty of the gorge.
Whether you visit the Breitachklamm or the Starzlachklamm, both gorges in the Allgäu promise an impressive natural experience.
