Autumnal pilgrimage: nature, spirituality and community in Kellberg!

On Saturday, October 27, 2025, numerous pilgrims set out on an impressive hike around Kellberg, which was led by the experienced pilgrim companions Annelene Wagner and Angela Höpfl-Brunner from the Straßkirchen parish association. The route, which stretched between the Danube and Erlautal valleys, offered a varied and physically demanding challenge. In bright autumn weather, the participants were able to enjoy the breathtaking panorama on the König Max Höhe.

After the hike, a special surprise awaited: the priest emeritus Alois Anetseder welcomed the pilgrims and led them through the parish church of St. Blasius. This informative church tour not only gave the participants interesting insights into the history of the place, but also rounded off the day spiritually. After such an eventful day, the pilgrims found a cozy end at the Kirchwirt in Kellberg.

The meaning of pilgrimage

But what motivates people to go on pilgrimages? According to a report by wandertourmag, pilgrimages are a wonderful combination of physical activity and spiritual reflection. They not only promote personal growth and self-discovery, but they also strengthen the community between pilgrims. Sometimes it's the community that makes the journey beautiful. Encounters and conversations quickly make you forget your efforts.

In this context, the hike to the Rotter Friedenskreuz can also be mentioned. Led by Gabi Hennecken, this led the pilgrims through a magical meadow landscape, past mixed forests and a beaver castle. In sunshine and good spirits, they experienced an hour-long climb, which ended with meditation and a final song at the Peace Cross. “The journey is the destination,” is a quote that is often discussed in such a context. It encourages you to think about the meaning of the journey and the respective goals.

Growing pilgrimage tourism

Pilgrimages have experienced a true renaissance in recent years. Its roots lie in various religions and aim to find inner peace. The Way of St. James in particular attracts pilgrims from all over the world. Historically significant sites such as Santiago Cathedral and Roncesvalles Monastery are popular stops that often offer inspiration and new perspectives.

However, the practical aspect of pilgrimage should not be underestimated. Properly prepared, with the right equipment and good training, you not only strengthen your fitness, but also find peace in nature. Pilgrim hostels often offer simple but warm accommodation that promotes exchange between pilgrims. Sustainability also plays an increasing role these days in preserving the beauty of these natural routes.

Overall, these events and experiences show how important it is to “recharge” spiritually and emotionally. No matter whether hiking on the paths of the Donausteig or the routes of the Way of St. James - pilgrimage is an invitation to self-reflection, to meet others and to return to the essentials.
