Fraudulent shock call: Seniors in Regensburg are victims of machinations!
On June 26, 2025, there were two frightening fraud attempts in Regensburg that involved so-called “shock calls” to older people. When making these insidious calls, scammers usually pose as relatives or even police officers. Your goal? To persuade the called party to hand over money or valuables. In recent cases, the callers reported a serious traffic accident involving family members and put massive pressure on the victims to obtain immediate payments. This is anything but an isolated case - Bavaria Police warns urgently about these scams.
In the first case, a senior citizen over 80 years old was contacted. The caller spoke of a serious accident involving his son and demanded that the money be handed over quickly. According to the senior citizen concerned, the fraudsters met in the afternoon on Michael-Burgau Straße. In the second case, a 76-year-old woman received a call with the same allegation, in this case it was her daughter who was allegedly involved in a fatal accident. Here, too, the woman was made to hand over jewelry and valuables to an unknown man on Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse. This is a classic example of the shock call, where perpetrators lie and manipulate phone lines to overwhelm and deceive their victims.
The fraudster's scam
Shock calls often fall into the same patterns. These fraud attempts are primarily aimed at older people, who may not have the necessary distrust. The callers use time pressure and emotional stress to persuade the victims to act quickly. This can take the form of handing over money or handing over valuables. As Polizeiberatung explains, there are even variants in which the fraudsters say that money and valuables in a bank safe deposit box are unsafe and must therefore be taken to the police.
It is all the more important that the public, especially older people, is informed about such scams. Pflegehilfe Seniors emphasizes that there are various protective measures to arm yourself against such calls. If you or someone you know receives a suspicious call, hanging up and calling 911 directly is the best course of action. Under no circumstances should cash or valuables be handed over to strangers.
