Eisbären Regensburg scores points for breast cancer awareness in Pinktober!

Not only is ice hockey played in Regensburg, but it also sets an important example for health. On Friday, October 16, 2025, the Eisbären Regensburg met ESV Kaufbeuren in the Donauarena and not only fought for points, but also for attention to a serious issue: breast cancer. As part of the “Pinktober” campaign, the players wore special pink jerseys to raise awareness for early detection and treatment of breast cancer. These special jerseys are up for auction until tonight, and all proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Center at St. Josef Hospital, where urgently needed equipment will be financed. That reports Charivari.

However, the game itself ended on a sobering note for the Eisbären. They lost the home game 1:4 against Kaufbeuren, which doesn't make the current season any easier. Coach Peter Flache is challenged because after this game the Eisbären are in seventh place in the table and have to prove themselves against the Blue Devils from Weiden the next day. It remains to be seen whether they can maintain their strong defense, which only allows an average of 1.7 goals per game, against Weiden.

Education is the goal

Every year in Germany, around 70,000 women and 700 men are diagnosed with breast cancer, making this disease the most common cancer among women. Statistics show that one in eight women will be affected in their lifetime. The average age at diagnosis is 64, but 30 percent are younger than 55. It is all the more important to point out the importance of early detection and targeted treatment. These circumstances are also behind the importance of the “Pinktober” campaign, which not only raises awareness of the disease, but also shows the importance of early diagnosis. That also underlines breastcancer.de.

“We have the opportunity to make a difference!” emphasizes coach Flache. The polar bears want to set an example with their special jerseys and at the same time collect donations for a project that specifically supports the breast cancer center. And this is exactly where it becomes clear that a sporting event like this has an impact far beyond the ice hockey rink and connects people with one another.

What's next?

A look at the table shows that the Eisbären Regensburg are still in sixth place after the defeat against Kaufbeuren, just six points behind the leaders. On Saturday, October 19th at 6:30 p.m., fans can cheer on the Eisbären again when they face the Blue Devils from Weiden. There's a lot of excitement, and with any luck, they can get back to winning ways while continuing to raise awareness for breast cancer.

It is a campus of hope that the polar bears and their supporters are pushing through together. Maybe this “Pinktober” can be a step forward not only for ice hockey, but also for raising awareness and fighting breast cancer.
