Union at the annual high: Merz scores, SPD and Greens on par with!

In the latest survey on the Germany trend, the Union (CDU and CSU) shows with 32 percent an increase of one percentage point compared to the previous week. This is the best value for the Union this year after it was last 33 percent in December 2024. The AfD remains at a stable 21 percent. However, the SPD has lost a point and is now on par with the Greens, which remain unchanged at 14 percent. The Left Party can improve by one point to 6 percent, while the FDP remains constant at 4 percent. Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) also has a slight increase in 0.5 points to 4.5 percent. According to this survey, the Union had a majority with the SPD, the Greens and the AfD, with an alliance being excluded with the AfD.

Friedrich Merz from the CDU receives the greatest approval among the candidates for chancellor. 34 percent of the respondents believe that he would be a good chancellor, which shows one point more than before. However, 56 percent do not consider him a good chancellor. Olaf Scholz from the SPD is approved by 26 percent (two more points), while 67 percent believe that he would not be a good chancellor. Robert Habeck from the Greens comes to 25 percent approval, which means less than before; 64 percent also do not believe that it is well suited. Alice Weidel from the AfD receives 19 percent approval, which represents one more point, but 71 percent do not see them as a good chancellor.

coalition options in Rhineland-Palatinate

When considering the possible government coalitions in Rhineland-Palatinate, it can be seen that the current coalition of the SPD, FDP and Bündnis 90/The Greens would no longer have a majority. Coalitions are proposed that together have to win at least 51 mandates in parliament. However, coalitions are also taken into account, which do with more than 41, but less than 51 mandates. In this context, the five percent hurdle must also be observed, through which parties would be disadvantaged in their seating in their seating.

Current Situation in Thuringia

The situation in the Thuringian state parliament shows that the current coalition of the CDU, BSW and SPD is in danger. This coalition is shown in the analyzes with a red frame that signals that it also no longer had a majority. When considering coalition options, groups with at least 88 seats are required, which must receive at least 45 mandates. Similar to Rhineland-Palatinate, the five percent hurdle can also lead to changes in the possible distribution of seats.

The survey was carried out by Infratest Dimap between Monday and Wednesday with 1,579 eligible voters. It is striking that 35 percent of those surveyed want the Union to lead the next government, while 17 percent prefer an SPD-led government. With a hypothetical coalition with the Union, 32 percent would like to work with the SPD, 17 percent with the AfD and 16 percent with the Greens. In addition, 13 percent of the respondents state that their election preferences could still change by the election day on February 23; 69 percent have already made a decision.
