Wombach cooks record-breaking dumpling: enjoy 464.8 kilograms!
History was made in the picturesque village of Wombach, Lower Franconia on June 22, 2025. To mark the 700th anniversary, an impressive world record attempt was launched with a potato dumpling. The gigantic dumpling weighed a whopping 464.8 kilograms, surpassing the previous record of 365 kilograms, which was set in Jena in 2010 Cologne City Gazette reported.
Organizer Klaus Roth was enthusiastic about the idea of not only celebrating the tradition of potato dumplings with this record attempt, but also attracting numerous visitors to the jubilee festival. “This has brought the village community together!” he said enthusiastically. The dumpling was prepared for over 21 hours in an oversized cooking pot, which was not only impressive with a diameter of 1.60 meters and a height of two and a half meters, but also required several thousand liters of water - 2,500 liters to be exact.
Preparations and preparation
A smaller sample dumpling, about 0.5 meters in size, was prepared in May in preparation to ensure everything went smoothly. The original plan was to peel the potatoes myself. But to save time, a commercial dough maker was finally hired. On the big day, cooking took place at a temperature of 90 degrees after the dumpling had first absorbed heat. Despite its enormous dimensions, the dumpling was ultimately a culinary delight after the long cooking time, which around 2,000 onlookers were able to enjoy to the fullest on site.
The visitors were enthusiastic and emphasized that the dumpling tasted delicious and was almost like a normal Sunday dumpling. And that's particularly impressive when you consider that the previous world record was in Jena, where a dumpling weighing 365 kilograms was cooked in 2010. Back then, the dumpling was prepared in a fireproof cylinder and the preparation time was around eight hours. Numerous spectators were also present at the event in Jena, who, after preparation, were served the dumpling in portions and consumed it within 20 minutes Welt.de and stern.de.
A celebration for the community
The record attempt in Wombach not only amazed people, but also strengthened the sense of community in the village. “It was a huge pleasure to experience everything here with so many people,” said Roth happily. The fatter dumpling from Wombach now certainly has a good chance of securing a place in the Guinness Book of Records. This will happen after the record is officially verified.
With such success and the joint celebration, the anniversary will certainly be remembered for a long time. It remains to be seen what the future holds for potato dumplings. Maybe we'll see more exciting records from Germany soon?
