Free voters facing the challenge: District council elections in 2026 are coming up!

There is a lot of turmoil in the political landscape in Starnberg. The district council elections are just around the corner on March 8, 2026, and the Free Voters (FW) are already busy putting forward their candidates. District candidate Michaela Eisenschmid and a strong team of four incumbent and four former mayors are ready to enter the race. But it's not that easy, because there are no FW lists available in four of the 14 municipalities. This affects the communities of Gauting, Herrsching, Inning and Krailling - and this gap could have serious consequences for the Free Voters. [Merkur].

“There is something going on,” notes Matthias Vilsmayer, deputy district councilor and board member of the FW. He is actively interested in making it to at least one of the four non-FW lists. Because without their own list, other parties could move up on the ballot papers, which is a major concern for the Free Voters. Above all, the fact that the Independent Voters' Association (UWG) in Inning recently broke away from the FW district association is causing unrest. This not only results in internal conflicts, but also leads to Monika Schüßler-Kafka, deputy mayor of Inning, being removed from the FW district council list.

Political mobilization

The Free Voters are not standing idle. They are considering approaching potential candidates and setting up local associations in order to be able to present themselves as widely as possible on the ballot papers. Vilsmayer emphasizes how important district politics is for the communities and that it is necessary to be actively involved in the district council. The current situation is forcing the FW to develop new strategies and strengthen its position in order not to fall further behind.

Another problem is the UWG, which plans to only compete in Starnberg under its own name in 2026. After separating from the FW regional association, they need 190 supporter signatures according to a change in the law. They may also want to hold a vote on this to clarify their official name and place on the ballot.

Elections and their meaning

The upcoming elections are of great importance for those involved. As the Bavarian Statistics shows, the general municipal and district elections are crucial for the election of members of the municipal or city councils, district councils and mayors. The electoral period is generally six years, which underlines the significance of the coming elections. In regions where the term of office extends beyond election time, there will be no election for leaders on election day.

It remains to be seen how the political cards will be reshuffled before next year's election. The Free Voters and the UWG are facing exciting challenges, and the next few months are crucial for the political future in the Starnberg region. A good hand and strategic skills are required!
