Hans Martin Grötsch elected as the new General Secretary of the Free Voters!
With the election of Hans Martin Grötsch as the new General Secretary, the Free Voters of Bavaria have taken a significant step towards their municipal goals. At a recent state general meeting, Grötsch was elected as Susann Enders' successor. He takes on a central role to lead the party into the upcoming 2026 local elections. Hubert Aiwanger, who was re-confirmed as state chairman with an impressive 95 percent of the vote, emphasized the party's communal roots and warmly congratulated his new deputy. This reports that Upper Palatinate Echo.
In his acceptance speech, Grötsch was pleased with the overwhelming response to his election and appealed to the importance of representing all parts of the Free Voters family. He is serious about professionalizing the structures in order to achieve 15 percent plus X in the next state election. “We rely on citizen-oriented policy at all political levels,” said Grötsch.
Strengths of cities and communities
The state assembly's motto was “Strong municipalities – strong Bavaria”. Within this framework, several resolutions were adopted that aim to strengthen cities, markets and communities. Aiwanger made it clear that more fair resources, less bureaucracy and planning security are of essential importance for municipalities.
The meeting, which took place outdoors under strict Corona requirements, was able to look back on a positive outcome: around 20 new local associations were founded in the last few weeks. This initiative shows how active the Free Voters are in different regions to expand their presence and influence.
The new state board
In addition to the election of Grötsch, other key positions on the state board were also filled. In addition to Grötsch in the role of deputy chairman, other important figures such as Prof. Dr. Michael Piazolo and Armin Kroder were elected. Sven Baumeister is new to this committee. Bernhard Schmidt also received a place on the state board and presented the resolution “Promoting the energy transition, securing regional value creation – PV storage program for all of Germany”.

Aiwanger did not leave unanswered the fact that the Free Voters want to distance themselves from ideology-driven politics and underlined the importance of centrist politics. The pressure on the party is increasing, especially with the upcoming state elections, where they want to go on the offensive with a constant increase in importance and a clear agenda.
The Free Voters of Bavaria have a long tradition, which began in 1998 with the founding of the voter group “FW FREIE WÄHLER Bayern e.V.” began. Since then, they have repeatedly achieved impressive election results - most recently 15.8 percent in the state elections in 2023. At a time when many are calling for a breath of fresh air in politics, they seem to have exactly the right instinct to continue to achieve strong results in the future. This is reflected not least in the successful coalition with the CSU and the appointment of several ministries. The future of the Free Voters looks promising and the course has been set.
The coming weeks and months will show how the new composition on the board will affect the election strategies and whether the desired results can be achieved. The Free Voters are ready to take on the challenges and give the citizens of Bavaria a voice.
