Only 31 percent have an emergency package: Germany is left without a plan!

A recent survey conducted by Wasserpumpe.de in collaboration with Norstat shows that Germans are overwhelmingly interested in emergency preparedness. But the reality is sobering. 55 percent of those surveyed believe it is necessary to prepare for possible emergency situations. However, only 31 percent have a fully or partially packed emergency kit at home. This discrepancy between awareness and action is a topic of conversation.

What is particularly striking is that 69 percent of those surveyed said they did not have an emergency kit or felt unsure about their supplies. Essential components of an emergency kit, such as water, non-perishable food, batteries and a radio, seem to be missing in many places. Another point that makes you think: Only 21 percent of participants made arrangements or a plan with their family members or roommates. An overwhelming 54 percent have given “no thought at all” to potential emergencies.

Responsibility for emergency situations

As the survey shows, 66 percent of those grappling with the issue see the government as responsible for emergency situations. Surprisingly, 20 percent believe that an emergency in Germany is unlikely. This attitude could greatly influence one's willingness to prepare oneself. However, although there is some awareness of the need for precaution, actual preparation falls by the wayside.

The research project “Informal and self-directed learning processes of the population in the area of emergency preparedness”, which is funded by the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, aims to further research knowledge and skills in the area of emergency preparedness. Among other things, aspects such as emergency supplies, equipment with camping stoves or lighting, and knowledge of first aid and firefighting were analyzed. While final data is still pending, initial insights suggest that many Germans need to expand their skills and knowledge in this area.

A call to action

The results of this survey and the accompanying research project make it clear that it is urgently time to think more about your own emergency preparedness. Because: In times of crisis, it is often too late to take action. It definitely makes sense to think about possible scenarios in advance and take the necessary precautions early on.

Whether it's talking to your family about an emergency plan or checking your food and water supplies, every little step counts. Particular attention should also be paid to communication and the informal acquisition of knowledge in order to make the community as a whole more resilient to future challenges.

In summary, it is up to all of us to take responsibility and better prepare ourselves for unexpected situations. Each of us can do our part to be prepared in emergencies.
