Warning strikes at Deutsche Post: ver.di demands 7% more wages!

Bayern, Deutschland - On February 27, 2025, warning strikes take place in Bavaria at Deutsche Post. The united service union (ver.di) has 800 employees at full-time strikes called up, which will lead to delays in the delivery. David Merck, State District Head of Ver.di Bayern, criticized the current offer of employers as inadequate.

The employer offer, which was presented on February 14, 2025, provides for a term of 27 months to March 31, 2027. It includes planned revenue increases of 1.8 percent from July 1, 2025 and 2.0 percent from October 1, 2026. In addition, the adaptation of the holiday regulation will be discussed, whereby only a few employees should be entitled to an additional vacation day.

claims of the union

The union ver.di calls for a linear increase in tariff of seven percent for around 170,000 collective staff, trainees and dual students at Deutsche Post AG. Furthermore, three additional vacation days for tariff employees and trainees as well as another vacation day for ver.di members are challenged. These demands are an expression of the dismissal about the increasing cost of living and the fact that many employees of Deutsche Post AG earn under the middle income in Germany.

The next round of tariffs is scheduled for 3rd and 4th March 2025. ver.di emphasizes the urgency of these negotiations, since the economic framework for the employees is becoming increasingly difficult.

context of the strikes

Today's warning strike is not the first of its kind. As early as January 28, 2025, a nationwide warning strike took place, followed by further striking call calls in various federal states such as North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Lower Saxony. These measures aim to persuade the employers to comply with the tariff demands, whereby the punctual delivery of election documents for the Bundestag election on February 23, 2025 is secured despite the warning strikes. This shows the balance that require the annual collective bargaining disputes, especially in times of important elections.

Andrea Kocsis from ver.di underlines the importance of these claims, especially with regard to the cost of living and the need to achieve appropriate wages for the employees in delivery. In the last election, almost half of the voters used postal voting, which also reinforced the challenges for the election offices and the employees at Deutsche Post.
