FDP criticism and visions for the future: New Year's reception in Seeshaupt enthusiastic!
The New Year's reception of the FDP district association Weilheim-Schongau in Seeshaupt on January 19, 2026 provided plenty of material for discussion. Chairwoman Judith Haberkorn vehemently criticized the current political situation in Germany, even going so far as to describe the country as a “banana republic” and calling for a move away from socialism. In their opinion, the economy in particular suffers from overwhelming bureaucracy, which places a heavy burden on family businesses and smaller companies. Haberkorn called for an acceleration of digital processes in the Weilheim district office and the introduction of self-service terminals to make it easier for citizens to access administrative services.
In her lecture she made it clear how important equal living conditions are between town and country. Transport infrastructure and modern mobility solutions play a central role. Clemens Deyerling, managing director of “Omobi”, presented an innovative, digital on-demand bus system that is successfully operated in several Upper Bavarian communities. An example of such mobility solutions is the Blaue Land-Bus, which is based on the omobi Murnau local bus.
Skilled labor shortage in the craft sector
A central theme of the evening was the shortage of skilled workers in the craft sector, which was also made clear by Nicole Pfeffer, guest speaker and author of the book “Zukunftsmacher Handwerk”. The trained chef with a part-time business degree emphasized how important it is to get young people excited about the craft. In the last 15 years, the craft has increased its attractiveness thanks to targeted educational measures. Despite these efforts, a serious situation still exists, which is also being highlighted by the Federal Employment Agency. Currently, around 250,000 positions remain unfilled in the German skilled trades, including 38% of all training positions. It is particularly serious in professions in plumbing, heating and air conditioning technology as well as in the construction and expansion sectors.
The Federal Employment Agency also draws attention to a decline in demand for skilled workers. In August 2024, with 130,000 jobs reported, a decline of 6% was recorded compared to the previous year. This makes it clear that many skilled trades are considered bottleneck occupations and that solutions are urgently needed.
Digitalization as a source of hope
What can be done to counteract the shortage of skilled workers? The answer could lie in digitalization. More and more companies are being asked to develop new strategies to optimize their processes. The [Handwerksblatt](https://www.handwerksblatt.de/themen-specials/digitales-handwerk/mit-digitalisierung-gegen-den-fachkraefte Mangel) reports that automated systems and AI can not only increase efficiency, but also increase the attractiveness for potential applicants. Digital solutions, such as online appointment booking systems or automated order processes, relieve employees and improve customer service.
However, digitalization requires a clear strategy: from the analysis of operational processes to the gradual implementation of the measures. A CHECKLIST for digitalization could help companies take the step into the digital future. This also includes addressing potential skilled workers via social media - a strategy that can no longer be neglected these days.
Overall, it can be said that both political and economic aspects urgently need to be reconciled in order to overcome the challenges in the craft sector and secure the future of the industry.
