New substation near Weißenburg: pioneer of the energy transition!
A lot is currently happening in the area of energy supply in the Weissenburg region. A new substation is to be built there and will play a significant role in the energy transition. The planned 20 to 30 hectare facility will be realized by N-Ergie Netz GmbH and is intended to support the expansion of renewable energies.
What is particularly exciting about this project is that the Westbayernring was removed from the network development plan. This opens up new perspectives for electricity supply in the region. The exact location and route of the substation have not yet been determined, but will be announced soon. According to nn.de, an important major project in the Weissenburg area is being tackled.
Progress in construction preparation
Work is currently underway in Mischelbach, directly east of Bundesstraße 2, where excavators are preparing the construction site. Construction of the company building is scheduled to begin in a few weeks. Another milestone will be the installation of the electrical system, which is scheduled to start in 2024. The substation itself will be equipped with a large transformer of 40 MVA, with the option of later expansion to a total of 126 MVA. The total expenditure for the project amounts to around 13 million euros, as inFranken reports.
The initiative to create this substation is no coincidence. As part of the energy transition, which is intended to make Germany climate-neutral by 2045, the need for stable energy supplies is growing. In 2024, around 205 million tons of CO2 could be saved through renewable energies, the highest value in history. The share of renewable energies in net electricity generation will also continue to increase - and this is exactly where the new substation wants to make its contribution. Statista reports that the share of renewable energies in final energy consumption should be increased to 41 percent by 2030 and the share of electricity consumption should be at least 80 percent.
A great responsibility for the future
The new substation is more than just a technical installation. It symbolizes the change that the energy transition brings with it. By creating connections between medium and high voltage levels, N-Ergie Netz GmbH is responding to the challenges of expanding renewable energies in the region. The focus here is on increasing the absorption capacity for solar power plants and adapting to the weather conditions that the use of renewable energies brings with them.
As a local news magazine, we follow developments in energy supply and the associated social changes. The substation near Weißenburg is an example of how local projects can contribute to the energy transition in Germany. We will keep a close eye on further progress in the coming months.
