Major rail projects: Franconia is now at a standstill – commuters in need!

Train travelers in Bavaria have to be prepared for some restrictions, because from October 10, 2023, the railway line between Würzburg and Treuchtlingen will be closed in sections. Loud Augsburger Allgemeine The construction work will last until December 13, 2023. The extensive renovation not only affects Middle and Lower Franconia, but also has an impact on long-distance traffic, including diversions and delayed travel times.

Commuters should pay particular attention to the periods from October 10th to December 13th and from October 17th to 26th. During these phases, the route between Würzburg and Marktbreit, as well as the entire route from Würzburg to Treuchtlingen (approx. 140 km), is closed. Those affected are asked to switch to replacement buses, while the train stations in Gunzenhausen and other affected regions will not be served during construction work. Northern Bavaria adds that two bridges in particular need to be renovated in the region.

Details about the construction work

One focus of the work is on the barrier-free expansion of Gunzenhausen train station, which is scheduled to be completed by spring 2027. This includes improving infrastructure for travelers with disabilities, a step that the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure promotes. Barrier-free access to train stations is becoming increasingly important, and those responsible emphasize that the economic interest must not be lost sight of.

Long-distance travelers face additional restrictions. The intercity trains IC 2082/2083, which run from Hamburg to Berchtesgaden, as well as the IC 2084/2085 to Oberstdorf, will be completely canceled during the construction period. In addition, tourist trains between Hamburg, Hanover, Würzburg and Munich are being rerouted during this time, which in some cases means that the stop in Augsburg is no longer necessary. Commuters and travelers therefore have to prepare for longer journey times and changed train connections. There will be no train service between Ansbach and Treuchtlingen, especially during the holidays on November 1st and 2nd.

In summary: The upcoming construction work will cause temporary inconveniences, but are aimed at an improved future. While the railway operators are revising their transport concepts, long-distance transport and regional train 62 from Pleinfeld via Gunzenhausen to Wassertrüdingen are hoping for normality soon. However, the conversion and adjustments are necessary to create a barrier-free and modern train station in Gunzenhausen.
