Factors for a long life

But what are the secrets to a long life? A study by the Federal Institute for Population Research and the Max Planck Institute shows that many Germans are affected by cardiovascular diseases, which has a negative impact on average life expectancy. Despite a modern healthcare system, Germany is in the bottom third of Western Europe when it comes to life expectancy. Loud NDR 50 percent of our longevity depends on genetics and the other 50 percent depends on our lifestyle.

Some key factors that promote longevity include sleep, exercise, diet, and prevention and care. Recommended lifestyle changes include:

  • Körperlich aktiv sein
  • Gesunde Ernährung
  • Keine Zigaretten
  • Stressbewältigung
  • Maßvoller Alkoholgenuss
  • Regelmäßiger, guter Schlaf
  • Pflege positiver sozialer Kontakte
  • Vermeidung von Opioid-Schmerzmitteln

It is also important to realize that even at an older age, changes in lifestyle can have positive effects on life expectancy. The WHO also recommends planning 150 to 300 minutes of moderate exercise per week - a good reason to exercise regularly!

It's not just physical activity that's important for mental fitness. Cognitive exercises and social interaction have been proven to have a positive impact on brain health. Anyone who communicates regularly with friends or family and faces mental challenges can sustainably promote their well-being in old age. Improved sleep and active leisure activities act like loyal companions that support us in healthy years.

These topics will certainly play a central role in the discussion about longevity. Anyone who is interested in expanding their knowledge and would like to actively exchange ideas with the experts should not miss the panel discussion in Würzburg. A chance to ask questions and maybe even take home one or two new ideas for a healthier life. So stay tuned, maybe this is the first step into a long, healthy future!
