Shoemaker from Schweinfurt: craftsmanship meets tradition!

What's new in the world of crafts? Let's take a look at exciting stories from Lower Franconia that will be presented in the upcoming program “Fränkisch vor 7” on Thursday, June 26, 2025, from 6:05 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on BR Heimat. The show is not just about craft stories, but also about the folk music and culture of this region.

Particular attention is paid to Wolfgang Schad, a shoemaker from Schweinfurt who has an impressive 53 years of professional experience. Even though he has been retired for two years, he has no plans to close his tool bench permanently. Repairs to hiking boots are particularly popular at the moment, which is well received by customers. Schad emphasizes the appreciation he receives from his customers. This interaction and bond are still important to him and bring back old memories of his active time in the workshop.

Tradition and transition in hat fashion

Another exciting part of the program revolves around a traditional business in Würzburg that is being transferred to new hands. At the age of 70, the head of the hat shop is retiring and Laura Ziegler, only 35, is taking over the helm. Laura has known the store since she was a child and did an internship there, which made it the perfect start for her to take over. The first hat she made there remains a special memory for her. It turns out that the connection to this craft often lasts a lifetime and young talents who bring a breath of fresh air into traditional businesses are welcome.

Training in the skilled trades – a future-proof path

Training in the shoemaking trade takes place in the dual system, which means that learning locations are in both workshops and vocational schools. There are various vocational schools available for aspiring shoemakers in Germany, such as the vocational school for orthopedic technology in Munich or the Travemünde vocational school of the Lübeck Chamber of Crafts, to name just a few. These schools not only impart practical knowledge, but also theoretical knowledge that is essential for mastery of the craft - a goal that many strive for.

Shoemaking and many other skilled trades also offer attractive earning opportunities that begin during training. It is noteworthy that professions such as bricklayers and carpenters are based on the collective agreement of the construction industry. This means that craftsmen have numerous opportunities for further training and further education, be it through further training as a technician or further study.

The diversity and fascination of craftsmanship is reflected not only in the shops, but also in the stories of the people who are passionate about their profession. This and more will be highlighted in the upcoming broadcast. Stay tuned!
