Deutsche Bahn is bringing back direct connections between Hof and Nuremberg!
Travelers in Bavaria can breathe a sigh of relief: From Monday, October 13th, the important direct connection between Hof and Nuremberg will be put back into operation. Deutsche Bahn (DB) confirmed this on Wednesday. With a total of 14 daily trips, which also pass through Marktredwitz, commuters once again have numerous options to travel comfortably between these two cities. But not everything is in vain, because the train route between Hersbruck and Pegnitz remains closed for the time being due to serious damage to several bridges, such as the one German railway reported.
The challenges in the Pegnitztal are diverse. The train service there will be temporarily replaced by a rail replacement service. Over 60 buses ensure that the route between Hersbruck and Pegnitz continues to be served. The RE lines 30, 31, 32 and 38 currently end in Pegnitz, while the RE line 40/41 and RB trains of the Mittelfrankenbahn from Hersbruck travel on the right Pegnitz route. On the left Pegnitz route, passengers can also enjoy the Nuremberg S-Bahn trains.
Long-term renovation measures
DB InfraGo already has plans in place to modernize the Pegnitz bridges. It is an extensive process that takes into account the challenging topography of Franconian Switzerland. High environmental requirements must be observed due to various nature reserves as well as monument protection requirements. As the general renovation-bavaria informed, the general renovation of seven heavily used routes in Bavaria is planned from 2026. The aim of these comprehensive renovations is to increase reliability and performance in the German rail network.
The current work resulted in trains being stopped on the affected route in September. Passengers will have to use alternative means of transport until train services resume in February 2026.
As part of the announced changes, there will also be a new timetable from December 14th, which will then apply until next year. Until then, however, the restriction between Neukirchen and Weiden will remain in place, which will take the additional trains out of service from November 1st to 5th. This leaves users with the hope of a delayed but nevertheless early return to their usual mobility in the region.
To stay up to date, the DB recommends checking the information on its website or in the DB Navigator app. Because despite all the challenges, the safety of travelers comes first.
