First base school for Czech celebrated in Wunsiedel!
The Sigmund-Wann-Realschule in Wunsiedel recently received significant recognition. On July 7, 2025, the school was certified as a “Basic Secondary School for Czech”, making it the first of its kind in Upper Franconia. This award was presented by Mathilde Eichhammer, the ministerial representative for secondary schools in the Upper Palatinate. The secondary school has been offering Czech as a final examination subject since 2007 and can now feel particularly proud of its role as a pioneer in the field of Czech teaching in the Free State of Bavaria.
Czech in the Bavarian education system
Czech has a permanent place in schools in the Bavarian part of the EUREGIO EGRENSIS, but is not offered everywhere. Students have the opportunity to learn Czech in working groups or as an elective subject. The schools that offer Czech include some well-known high schools and secondary schools in Upper Palatinate and Upper Franconia. If desired, these schools and their offerings can be presented more comprehensively to make the selection easier for those interested. Euregio Egrensis emphasizes that learning Czech is particularly popular at the Sigmund-Wann-Realschule Wunsiedel.
Teaching materials and projects
Various interesting materials are available for teachers who want to teach Czech. These include, among other things, the publication "Čeština - Czech for secondary schools and high schools", which impresses with its exciting framework and tasks that build on one another. In addition, there are special handouts such as “Dětsky hezky česky for children”, which aim to introduce young learners to the Czech language in a playful way. These materials can be downloaded free of charge or obtained in printed form at various collection points. Further information can be found on the Euregio Bavaria.
With the certification as a support secondary school for Czech, the Sigmund-Wann-Realschule will continue to be an important player in the exchange between German and Czech-speaking cultures in the future. Getting started with the Czech language could open the way to new opportunities and experiences for many students. And who knows, perhaps the learning experience will give one or two students the prospect of becoming a new generation of language mediators and bridge builders.
