Marktredwitz takes 88th place: Where cyclists still have to fight!
In a current survey on bicycle-friendliness, Marktredwitz ranks 88th out of a total of 429 municipalities in Germany. The result was determined as part of the ADFC bicycle climate test, which was carried out several times and took place from September to November 2024 and is one of the largest cycling climate surveys in the world. Around 213,000 cyclists from 1,047 locations provided feedback on the local conditions. ADFC bicycle climate test clearly shows that many municipalities still need improvement.
Marktredwitz received positive feedback from its cyclists, but it is clear that there is still “room for improvement”. City politicians have recognized that cyclists are an important part of the transport concept and have worked for years to promote mobility for cyclists. A bicycle representative should help ensure that cyclists' concerns are heard and that the infrastructure is constantly improved. In the urban transport concept in particular, both car and bicycle traffic are taken into account.
Potential for improvement
However, one problem remains: cyclists on Leopoldstrasse have to merge into car traffic at the junction with Ottostrasse, as the safe cycle path ends there. This causes uncertainty among users because, according to the ADFC, 70% of cyclists feel unsafe in traffic, especially because of narrow or blocked bike paths. The survey also shows that although satisfaction with local conditions has increased slightly, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
In other cities, conditions have improved considerably. The ADFC reports that Nuremberg, Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main in particular have made great progress. Frankfurt leads the ranking of the most bicycle-friendly cities, followed by Hanover and Bremen. In contrast, there are critical voices about the lack of bicycle support in cities like Düsseldorf, Essen and Berlin. Cyclists should be able to navigate safely everywhere. Utopia emphasizes that separate cycle paths are required on main traffic axes and country roads.
Overall, the survey shows that Marktredwitz is on the right track, but still has a lot of potential to meet the needs of cyclists. The city's commitment to further expanding and improving the infrastructure is an important step in the right direction. So that not only the grades increase, but also the safety and satisfaction of all cyclists in the region.
