Labor market in Bremen: unemployment at a ten-year high!

The current developments on the labor market in the Bremen-Bremerhaven employment agency district paint a bleak picture. How Weser report reports that unemployment in the region is at a ten-year high. In June 2025, 45,398 people are unemployed, a decrease of only 29 people compared to May. Nevertheless, the number has increased by an alarming 2,542 people compared to the same month last year.

“The dynamics on the labor market are severely dampened,” says Joachim Ossmann, chairman of the Bremen-Bremerhaven employment agency. The reason for this is, among other things, the difficult economic situation, which is having a negative impact on the hiring situation of many companies. Despite a slight decline in the unemployment rate from 11.0 percent in May to 10.9 percent in June, the situation remains tense. Compared to June last year, the rate has increased by 0.7 percentage points.

Regional differences

The situation varies significantly depending on the city and district. In Bremen, 34,287 people are currently registered as unemployed, which represents a minimal improvement. In contrast, the city of Bremerhaven is particularly affected with an unemployment rate of 14.1 percent. Here, average unemployment has risen to 8,594 people, an increase of 615 people. The Osterholz district is also cause for concern, as unemployment here has increased by 304 people to 2,105.

The increase in unemployment among foreigners is particularly noticeable, with an average of 18,720 people increasing by 10.2 percent compared to the previous year. A similar picture emerges in the area of female unemployment: here the number of unemployed women rose by 1,191 to 18,895 people. There was a slight increase of 1.5 percent among young people aged 15 to 24, while the numbers in the 15 to 20 age group fell by 2.5 percent.

Open positions and the outlook

According to the reports, the number of vacancies has reduced. There are currently 7,428 open positions, a decrease of 19 positions compared to the previous month and 1,324 fewer positions than in the same month last year, which corresponds to a decline of 15.1 percent. Nevertheless, companies, particularly in the manufacturing sector, temporary employment and scientific and technical services, are reporting increasing demand.
However, this need-based search for applicants is not made easy in an uncertain economic situation.

According to the employment agency's estimates, the outlook for 2024 remains tense. The uncertainties caused by the Ukraine and Gaza wars as well as ongoing inflation are dampening economic expectations. In addition, many employees are approaching retirement, which results in a significant need for replacements. The focus should now be on qualification and the promotion of professional qualifications while working for the company in order to be better able to cope with future challenges, such as employment agency.de notes.

Overall, the situation on the labor market in the Bremen-Bremerhaven district is not very encouraging. It remains to be hoped that measures to promote jobs and combat unemployment will be initiated as quickly as possible.
