Dresden Ice Lions miss their first home win in dramatic overtime!

On October 12, 2025, the Dresdner Eislöwen experienced their eagerly awaited first home game in the DEL, but the joy only lasted for a short time. In the duel against the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven, the Eislöwen lost 4:5 after extra time and thus missed their first home win of the season and suffered their sixth defeat in a row. The game started very badly for the Dresden team, as Bremerhaven struck twice in the third minute and quickly presented the Eislöwen with a major challenge.

Janick Schwendener was in goal for the Ice Lions because regular goalkeeper Julius Hudacek had to take a break due to injury. Another unfortunate event occurred for Dresden when Dane Fox had to leave the ice before halftime due to a bleeding laceration. But the Eislöwen were not discouraged and showed morale in the first third: Austin Ortega scored the goal to make it 1-2 in the 18th minute.

Pure tension in the second third

The second third began with another setback for the Ice Lions when Wejse increased the lead to 1:3 in the power play (26th minute). But Dresden's response followed promptly: In a furious exchange of blows, the Ice Lions turned the game around with three goals within just eight minutes. Lance Bouma brought his team to 2-3 with a power play goal in the 31st minute before Andrew Yogan equalized in the 37th minute. Shortly before the second siren, Ortega equalized with a converted penalty to make it 4:3 (39th minute). The mood in the well-filled Joynext Arena, which had 4,400 spectators, including around 800 from Bremerhaven, was boiling with enthusiasm.

In the final third, the Ice Lions managed to defend their lead over long stretches. But the joy didn't last long: 1:19 minutes before the end, Wejse equalized again and made it 4:4, which took the game into extra time.

A bitter end

The overtime couldn't be surpassed in terms of tension, but unfortunately it was Götz who scored the decisive goal in the 64th minute to make it 5:4 for Bremerhaven. Despite the narrow loss, Austin Ortega was optimistic and explained that the team is learning from this experience and continuing to improve. Even if the Eislöwen still have to collect points, they still scored points in the DEL for the second time in a row.

The Eislöwen now have to concentrate on the next games in order to finally reverse the climbing trend in the table. The fans are hoping for a speedy improvement and a first home win, which they have been waiting for for a long time.
