Germany in the gas status update: filling level reaches 48.82 percent!
What's going on in the area of gas supply in Germany? As the Allgäuer Zeitung reported on June 26, 2025, the gas storage facilities in the country are currently at a full level of 48.82 percent. This represents a small increase of 0.32 percent compared to the previous day. Fortunately, the situation remains stable and the gas supply is not critical. A continuous increase has been observed over the last few months, showing a significant improvement compared to previous weeks.
At the start of the year, the gas storage levels were below the previous year's levels, but within the expected range. The filling level on January 1, 2025 was only 80.11 percent and has steadily improved since then, as ndr.de highlights. The level development shows that 39.65 percent had already been reached on June 1st, thus continuing a positive trend.
Gas consumption and security of supply
But what about consumption? Gas consumption in Germany remains at a comparatively high level. A total of 844 TWh of gas was consumed in 2024, representing an increase of 3.5 percent compared to the previous year. Households and businesses in particular need to be taken into account, as they account for 39 percent of total gas consumption. All of this means that the highest gas consumption remains in winter, especially in December and January. Average gas imports were around 16.5 terawatt hours per week in 2024, primarily from Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium, while imports of liquefied natural gas via new terminals are also helping to fill storage. Here zdf.de shows how important these measures are for energy security.
It is important to know that the gas storage facilities in Germany are designed so that they can cover the national gas demand for around two cold winter months. Compared to the years 2017 to 2021, the current level is around 4 percentage points below average. Nevertheless, Germany can fill over 100 percent with a full storage tank if the conditions are optimal, i.e. the temperature, calorific value and pressure coincide ideally. This gives hope should there actually be bottlenecks, as allgaeuer-zeitung.de adds.
Where is the journey leading?
The energy future looks promising due to various factors. One example is the EU, which plans to stop importing gas from Russia by the end of 2027. The largest gas supplier, Norway, has already replaced Russia in this regard. Innovative approaches such as the use of LNG terminal deliveries and the constant optimization of gas storage technology will ensure secure supply in the future. However, dryness and cold in the winter months as well as the development of global gas prices remain challenges that need to be monitored.
The legal requirements for determining gas storage remain optimistic. Storage must reach at least 75 percent by September 1st, and the goals in recent years have always been achieved ahead of schedule. This gives hope that the next few months will be positive in gas storage.
