Completion of the Dresden residence lock: A dream comes true!

Dresden, Deutschland - The reconstruction of the Dresden Residenzschloss, which has been partially a construction site for 40 years, is to be completed in 2027, such as sächsische.de reported. The federal government and the Free State are expected to invest around 407 million euros in the restoration of the building complex destroyed in 1945. This is done with the aim of expanding the Residenzschloss to the Museum Center of the State Art Collections Dresden (SKD).

The castle chapel is currently being rebuilt and is intended to act as an event room with 270 seats, with musical events will take place again from October 2023. In the meantime, the propositional and large ballroom has been returned to its appearance from the 19th century since January 2023, with the planned handover to the SKD in early 2026.

historical importance of the residence lock

The Residenzschloss, which served as the main residence of the Elector and Kings of Saxony, was originally started in the Renaissance style in 1548 and completed in 1901 in the Neurenaissance style. The reconstruction, which began in 1986, follows the goal of restoring the destroyed parts of the castle and thus revitalizing an important historical place. As early as 2010 to 2013, the historical medieval rib vault was rebuilt.

The castle houses significant collections, including the green vault, the copperplate cabinet and the armory, and attracts numerous visitors. The parade rooms of August of the strong were equipped with historical furniture in 2019. The total costs for the restoration of the castle amount to around 380 million euros, with the historical and new green vault, the coin cabinet and the armory.

future steps

With a planned expansion of the large castle courtyard in 2026, the city laid the foundation for a cultural future. The last big act of the project will be the expansion of the rooms in the east wing, which is supposed to finally shine the residence lock in full shine.

The Residenzschloss is not only a testimony of Saxon history, but also one of the most visited museums in Dresden. Visitors can admire works of art by artists such as Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt as well as around 10,000 art objects in the armory and an important collection of Ottoman art in the Turkish Cammer. These treasures contribute to the cultural identity of Dresden and Saxony and will continue to shine in the coming years by completing the reconstruction.
