ATM blast in Neusäß: Chaos in the supermarket anteroom!

In the past few days, there have been several spectacular ATM blasts in Bavaria, which the police and the public put on alert. On Monday, April 15, 2025, an ATM was blown up in Upper Franconia. Just a day later, on Tuesday, another explosion in the Augsburg district followed, with the machine in the anteroom of a supermarket in Neusäß being attacked. The explosion was so violent that the anteroom of the business was completely destroyed. At least one suspected perpetrator fled in a car at high speed.

According to initial knowledge, the explosions are part of a questionable series. This incident is already marking the eighth ATM blast this year. For comparison: In the same period last year, there were already 13 such attacks by the end of April. The exact amount of the captured money is previously unknown. The police and explosive experts carried out comprehensive search for traces on Tuesday morning, and the State Criminal Police Office Bavaria (LKA) asks witnesses to report to identify possible perpetrators.

The tactics of the perpetrators

ATMs are often the goal of physical attacks, with the perpetrators increasingly falling on technical devices and explosive substances - a trend that has been observed in recent years. According to information of the bka , the attackers usually have a clear schedule and select places with little customer operation. The explosions can represent considerable dangers not only for the perpetrators themselves, but also for residents and passers -by, since rubble and the ruthless escape behavior are a great risk.

The use of fixed explosive substances, such as lightning hits, has increased, while the use of gas mixtures decreases. It is also noteworthy that the perpetrators often use highly motorized vehicles to escape an arrest, which means additional dangers for the emergency services and the public. These developments make the combating of ATM sprinkles a central area of responsibility for the police and the LKA.

increasing threat

The deeds have tends to have increased in the past five years. In 2021, 392 cases were registered in Germany, the second highest value since 2005 after 414 explosions were recorded in the previous year. The threat is particularly pronounced in regions near the Netherlands, such as North Rhine-Westphalia. The police Bavaria and the Bavarian State Criminal Police are therefore increasingly on preventive measures and joint investigations to identify and take up the perpetrators.

Another example of the mass of attacks is the incident on Sunday, March 10, 2024, when an ATM was also blown up in the Upper Franconian Konradsreuth. At the end of this explosion, four suspects were arrested from the Netherlands, Turkey and Afghanistan and were issued against the arrest warrants for attempted murder and heavy band theft. Such established relationships illustrate the international dimension of the problem and the need for a coordinated approach on both sides of the border.

In view of the worrying development, the question remains how the security authorities can react to this threat. The fight against the ATM blasts remains of high priority for the Bavarian LKA and the public prosecutor's office, and it is recommended to consistently continue the existing security measures.
