Glass fiber for Landau: inform now and secure connections!

In Landau, information is currently being made about the expansion of fiber optic connections in various districts. Among others, Queichheim, Horst and the Wollmesheimer Höhe are affected. The goal of the fiber optic expansion is to provide a fast internet that not only makes the home office easier, but also improves the streaming of content. The prerequisite for the expansion is that at least 33% of households conclude a contract in these districts. The key date for this is April 5, 2025.

When households conclude a contract, you will receive a free fiber optic connection to your apartment or house. Sagnaries who later decide must expect connection costs of around 1,500 euros. In order to provide comprehensive information, several information events are planned:

  • 14. January, 7 p.m., Haus der Vereine Queichheim, Queichheimer Hauptstraße 85
  • 15. January, 7 p.m., Siedlerheim Wollmesheimer Höhe, Barbarossastraße 14
  • 16. January, 7 p.m., DLRG Horst, Stettiner Straße 4
  • 22. January, 7 p.m., Haus am Westbahnhof Landau West, at 44 (number 40a)

Visitors to these events can get advice from experts. In addition, a service point will be opened on the Kaufland car park at Dammühlstraße 11 from January 17th to provide further information.

technological foundations and variants of the fiber optic connections

The range of fiber optic connections includes various technologies: FTTH (fiber to the home) means that the fiber optics leads to the apartment, while FTTB (fiber to the building) takes the technology to the building. FTTC (Fiber to the Cabinet) describes the connection to the distribution box on the street. At FTTH, the existing router can be connected directly if it is up to date. Otherwise, a fiber optic modem or a new router is required. Whether older devices can be used depends on the availability and offer of the providers.

The fiber optic technology is considered forward -looking because it offers a higher speed and lower susceptibility to interference compared to DSL and cable. Nevertheless, progress in Germany is slow, since the spread of fiber optic connections has only increased by around ten percentage points since 2014. The majority of the broadband connections still take place via DSL, the market share of which continuously drops. With the gigabit strategy, the Federal Government aims to connect half of all households and companies to the fiber optic network by the end of 2025.

Currently the fiber optic content in Germany is around 11 percent and thus ranks 36 in the OECD ranking. For comparison: in Switzerland, the fiber optic content is already around 30 percent. Internationally leaders in fiber optic expansion are countries such as South Korea, Iceland, Spain and Lithuania.

In summary, the residents of Landau can look forward to an upcoming information offer that illuminates both the advantages and the technical details of a fiber optic connection. The possibility of sustainably improving your own internet speed and availability is an important step into the digital future.
