Alcohol ban in Hamburg-Altona: No more drinking in the train station!
From November 2025, there will be a ban on alcohol consumption at Hamburg-Altona train station. Those responsible decided this in order to improve the situation around the station and to build on the existing regulations at Hamburg Central Station. Loud NDR Experience at the main train station shows that such a ban has led to fewer conflicts under the influence of alcohol. Travelers feel safer and cleaning intervals have been reduced.
In detail, the ban stipulates that no alcohol may be consumed inside the station and no open bottles - whether beer, wine or schnapps - may be carried. However, there are exceptions: sealed bottles purchased for transport home are permitted. In the event of violations, expulsions can be issued and, in the event of repeat violations, even bans from the premises can be issued.
The area in front of the train station remains untouched
The district assembly has been critical of the drinking scene around the train station in the past. This ban could give them an incentive to look for alternatives and thus improve the overall picture. There is currently a comprehensive ban on alcohol consumption in Hamburg's subway and S-Bahn stations as well as on trains, and this has been consistently implemented since 2011. The long-distance train platforms in Altona were previously exempt from this regulation, which will change with the new resolution.
Expectations are high that this new ban will have a positive effect on the situation at Altona train station. With these measures, the authority is clearly targeting the public in order to create an overall safer environment. It is interesting to see how the dynamics will develop once the ban comes into force and whether the experiences at the main station can be transferred to Altona.
